City West Train Station

#1 Post by Benm16 » Wed Sep 30, 2015 1:08 pm

Since the new RAH is being built and their are a lot of other buildings going up in the city west area, I was thinking it would be so convienent if Adelaide got another train station close to RAH and SAMHRI. This station could provide quicker access for staff and students of the uni buildings and the RAH. It would also potentially provide stations for the interstate trains therefore eliminating the need for the current mile end station and providing interstate passengers the ability to enter Adelaide rather than mile end where they have to find another mode of transport to get them into the city.

The platforms for that location would almost join up with the platforms at Adelaide Railway Station. Rather than a City West Station, all that is needed is a western entrance to the ARS platforms. It should have been done as part of the convention centre upgrades, but obviously it wasn't considered.

I reckon move away from the current train station - use it for something else. I'd like to see an ambitious plan to re-route train services underground to the centre of the City and do away with the current terminus configuration of the station. Perhaps that could be the bold plan for the southern half of Victoria Square when it gets done in 30-40 years or so. Adelaide Central Station (underground of course)... Could become a central hub for connecting to all tram lines too...

How about this

Parklands Terminal becomes the terminus of all regional lines(that don't exist.... yet), Like the Southern Cross Station in Melbourne.

Also the O-Bahn is now a train line

One thing I've thought of is moving the Mile End station a little North to here:
Image

Gives access to the West of the Hospital, still close enough to Temple College, access to Bonython park and easy to change between train and tram...

Worthwhile suggestion and more useful location than Mile End, but only of benefit for Belair, Tonsley and Seaford line commuters. Outer Harbour and Gawler line commuters still need a western entrance to Adelaide Railway Station.

The idea of an underground loop or north/South connecting tunnel has been around since the days of MATS or before. Makes sense if we are to get serious about train use, but given the amount of use for AO, if Adelaide station was to be discontinued, any new underground station could not be too far west of the current location, or it will be perceived as too much of a walk for AO patrons. I guess what has come of this discussion is that..
1. Mile end as a station is pretty well good for nothing.
2. Dumping interstate passengers out in the desert that is the West end of the west parklands is poor form and this station needs moving closer immediately. Regional trains should be re-introduced, given the amount of footy fans that currently travel by road every weekend, and these trains should terminate in the CBD.

Depends if we could develop the cemetery into some kind of tourist drawcard. Restore all the busted and wornout headstones and tidy up the gardens. maybe even move some graves so a tramline could be put through the middle. Just imagine how long it would take to get approval for that

Not sure why you would want to put a tramline through the middle. Would have to cross the railyards and then where to from there? London Rd? Sir Don. or Anzac to Richmond would be likely serve better. I'd actually be pretty keen to see something go down Richmond Rd to Marion Rd. Then either going southwards or looping north around and into the airport. :2cents:
