Provisions for a subway?

#1 Post by Aidan » Tue Jan 10, 2017 6:35 pm

I remember reading a year or two ago that a building between the new RAH and the Morphett Street bridge had been disallowed because it would interfere with our ability to build a subway, but it later went ahead after provision for one had been made.

Does anyone know exactly what provision was made?

You know the gap between the uni buildings? That's the provision.

No I don't. Could you please give me the coordinates or show me on the map?

Thanks. That explains a lot, but the gap seems rather narrow. Is there really enough space for two tracks side by side on a curve to North Terrace?

Presumably wide enough for a tunnel to be built where 2 train tracks dive underground.........

If the previsions requirement is true, I assume most of the space has been made in planning of the foundations allowing for space underground.
However, I was told years ago that the Adelaide train station was built so the tracks could be extended through from where they currently end, going underground.

Yes if you were on a train heading towards the Adelaide train station then it might go underground first from the railyards, through the loop, before arriving back at North Terrace.

Not a fan of loops, they tend to add 10 minutes to about 50% of train journeys (hello Sydney and Melbourne!)

Adelaide's subway won't be a loop, but more of a U-shape through the city. Something more similar to Perth's underground line.

Since most of the railcars haven't been turned since they were first railed, a loop will provide an opportunity for this

Any idea who told you that? Looking in the station, the columns seem to be in the wrong place for that.

There was a plan for a line to run underground north of the existingstation, but I think the convention centre extension prevented that.

The gap below ground level is wider than it looks above ground - the dark coloured 'wedge' of the Adelaide Uni med school cantilevers out over the subway easement - the light coloured wall marks the actual western easement boundary (near enough).
