So the hub is going on the vacant block that formerly housed The Reject Shop back in the 90's by the looks of it.

It's generated plenty of controversy on a Salisbury-based Facebook group.

I can't see the public spaces working to be honest. The City Centre precinct in Salisbury is largely a ghost town these days with it's reputation in tatters with the level of anti-social activity around the area. Why would anyone risk their safety to hang out in front of the glorified council chambers?

THE construction of a luxury hotel in the heart of Elizabeth is part of Playford Council’s $300 million vision to transform it into “the state’s next great city.”

Mayor Glenn Docherty hopes the seven-storey hotel will become a symbol of the area’s economic growth and value.

The council and a private developer will build the $50 million hotel next to Prince George Plaza, near the corner of Philip Hwy and Main North Rd.

It will feature 260 rooms, a rooftop bar, two restaurants, function rooms, a gym and pool.

Building works are set to start late this year, creating 300 construction jobs and 220 ongoing positions.

Mr Docherty said the hotel would provide much-needed quality accommodation within the CBD.

“We’ve had a lot of buzz and positive expressions of interest from the market — local, interstate and overseas — and I’m pleased to see we have now signed a South Australian developer to build the new Playford City hotel in the heart of Elizabeth,” Mr Docherty said.

“For our community, it is not just a hotel. It is a symbol of our future economic prosperity and the opportunities that it represents,” Mr Docherty said.

“We are positioning our CBD as the service point for all northern parts of our state.

“The City of Playford is undergoing a massive transformation — from Holden heartland to South Australia’s next great city,” he said.

The council will now need to reach an agreement on the hotel’s concept design, which must then be endorsed by elected members before a contract is finalised.

Earlier this month, the State Government endorsed the $40 million Playford Arena ice and entertainment centre.

Ice Rinks Adelaide will develop the state-of-the-art arena opposite the site of the hotel.

Ice Rinks Adelaide director Stephen Campbell said the hotel would complement the project. “It’s a critical component in the CBD plan,” Mr Campbell said.

“World championships and international tournaments in ice hockey, figure skating, broomball, curling, short track speed skating and sports climbing are expected to be a regular feature at the arena.”

Mr Campbell said the complex would bring more than $4.5 million in annual tourism expenditure.

As someone else on this forum pointed out to me, the hotel is not for locals.....it is for business visitors.

No reason Elizabeth can't be the outer north CBD......build it and they will come.

However, I believe that the hotel should be in response to a Business Centre already established. Right now, it's a bit too early. People won't come to a hotel that's just been built but there's nothing to do.

However, I believe that the hotel should be in response to a Business Centre already established. Right now, it's a bit too early. People won't come to a hotel that's just been built but there's nothing to do.

Interstate visitors often stay at Mawson Lakes for visits to the Edinburgh precinct. More senior and international visitors stay in North Adelaide or the Adelaide CBD. I have no idea how many rooms that would be in an average week, or how easy it will be to get them to go to Elizabeth instead, but if it's not there, then nobody will.

"Events" at the new Ice centre might attract both the participants/performers from interstate and spectators from the Mid-north who don't want to drive home after the event. There is also the scope for various sizes of residential courses and conferences.

Two hundred and sixty rooms sounds like a lot from a standing start, but I doubt you achieve the wanted end result by building stage 1 for thirty rooms and then expanding later.

Anyone know who this private developer is proposing to build (pay) for it or who is funding it? It’s strange that the most important information hasn’t been disclosed by the council.

I have heard many people over the years complain about lack of decent business accomodation north of the city.
This will only increase with the new business park.

A DRAKES Supermarket distribution centre worth $80 million will be developed in Adelaide’s north and is expected to create up to 550 jobs.

The independent grocery retailer announced the project Tuesday morning, confirming it would be built on a 17ha site on Stebonheath Rd at Edinburgh North.

The development, fully funded by the local family-owned business, already has planning consent from Playford Council.

It is expected to be operational by June next year — creating about 300 jobs during construction and up to 250 further full-time equivalent positions once the state-of-the-art facility is up and running.

Once complete, the centre will stock about 23,000 separate lines of products including grocery, dairy and frozen foods. Preliminary site works have already started with scope for future development on the land.

More than $12m of robotics will be used to run a warehouse picking system.

Drakes Supermarkets general manager Bob Soang said people in the northern suburbs deserved a break after recent rough years.

“It’s a long-term investment and vote of confidence in our loyal customers and suppliers,” Mr Soang said.

“As a local family-owned business we are pleased to create so many jobs in the northern suburbs of Adelaide which have faced many challenges in recent years.

“(And) this is a major investment in the sustainable future of Drakes Supermarkets in SA.”

Mr Soang said the centre would be the “most advanced independent distribution and logistics” facility in the state.

Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said the centre was another step away from the “doom and gloom predicted by Holden’s closure”.

He said the Playford district was perfectly positioned to accommodate the development.

“This is just one of many private investments coming into our region which is clear evidence that our council is taking active role in shaping the future for Adelaide’s north,” he said.

An existing fresh fruit and vegetable distribution centre at Pooraka and meat distribution centre at Beverley will continue to operate.

I drove along Stebonheath Road today, land clearing is happening currently. I hope this means the roundabout at Stebonheath and Womma Roads is built shortly so trucks can navigate the intersection with ease

Clearing etc started at least a day before the announcement. It seems their announcement may have been forced by the announcement to the ASX from Metcash that Drake would not be a customer in SA after June next year. I wonder where Metcash's new DC will be.

Large vehicles do turn right at that corner already. Possibly the vacant blocks on the northwest of the intersection are reserved to put the roundabout off-centre, since there are large trees on both sides of Womma Road on the east side of Stebonheath Road.

The SA-BEST candidate for Taylor promoted an online petition to get the roundabout installed. It has over 3000 signatures.

Even the semi-trailer turning left out of Stebonheath Rd this morning used 3/4 of the width of Womma Road, so needed to wait for both directions to be clear. Waiting to go straight on northbound is "exciting" when a large vehicle turns right, too - either a semitrailer or a military Bushmaster.

It is likely that at least one Stobie pole will need to be moved, so "service relocation" will need to start well before the actual construction. I had heard that it is the responsibility for the Eyre developers, once they have sold a certain number of allotments.
