[COM] Gawler East Link Road | 5.5km | $60m

#1 Post by Eurostar » Fri Jan 05, 2018 12:32 am

A new road linking Main North Road to residential developments east of Gawler has been given the green light, paving the way for jobs and further investment in Adelaide’s north.

The $55m Gawler East Link Road will support approximately 110 construction jobs over the life of the project, with major works expected to start early next year.

The State Government has been working with the Gawler council, local developer Springwood Communities and the local MP Tony Piccolo to identify the road alignment which will create a link between Main North Road and Calton Road.

It will also include new traffic signals and an upgrade of the Main North Road intersection with Potts and Para roads, an upgrade to Potts Road, and a bridge over the South Para River.

The road will cater to new residential developments underway in Gawler East, Gawler South, and Evanston Park, which are expected to result in 3500 new dwellings housing an extra 8400 residents.

Developers, including Springwood Communities, and the Town of Gawler are expected to contribute more than $8m to the cost of the new road, which will stimulate investment in these residential developments, in turn boosting the local economy and creating jobs.

The Gawler East Link Road will also provide an alternate route for existing residents in Gawler East to access Main North Road, helping to reduce vehicle traffic through the Gawler town centre.

Background

The Gawler East Link Road will be a local road with a single lane in each direction, including bicycle lanes and new footpath.

The next stage will be to develop the concept design for further community consultation.

The request for tender for the main construction contract will be called later this year with major construction expected to commence early 2018 and be completed in 2019.

Further information is available at the Gawler East Link project website.

Quotes attributable to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan

The Gawler East Link Road is a significant piece of transport infrastructure for part of northern Adelaide which is experiencing significant residential growth.

It will reduce the impact of increased traffic volumes on the Gawler town centre generated by the thousands of new houses expected to be built in Gawler East and beyond.

The alignment of the road has been developed in consultation with the local community and has taken into account key issues including environmental and social considerations.

Quotes attributable to Member for Light Tony Piccolo

The Gawler East Link Road will provide local traffic with direct access to Main North Road without travelling through the Gawler town centre.

This will reduce travel times, as well as reducing the likelihood of crashes and reducing the vehicle emissions caused by travel delays.

The project will provide economic and social benefits for Town of Gawler residents as well as supporting approximately 110 construction jobs over the life of the project.

Quotes attributable to Gawler Mayor Karen Redman

The construction of the Link Road will see both investment and jobs created in Gawler which are fantastic outcomes for our community.

The Gawler East Link Road and associated traffic and community infrastructure delivery is a great example of how State and Local Government with the Private Sector have worked together to achieve positive community benefits.

The total investment in infrastructure for the Gawler East area is estimated at $80.1m and is expected to be delivered over the next 15 years.

Quotes attributable to Springwood Project Director Warwick Mittiga

We are very pleased to have worked collaboratively and successfully with the State Government and Council to facilitate the delivery of this key infrastructure project for Gawler and the north of Adelaide.

As the largest developer in the area, Springwood Communities is fully supportive of making a substantial financial commitment to construction of the road, and we are particularly appreciative of the Minister’s commitment to the region.

This is a genuine ‘win-win’ for all parties and the stimulation to Gawler through the construction jobs created immediately, as well as the long term benefits, can’t be underestimated.

From a Springwood perspective, knowing we have the certainty of the Gawler East Link Road allows us to properly plan for the future of our community and will see us able to bring forward investment into local amenities, community facilities and the residential community.

That looks like the press release from 22 May 2017. The web site news section says that tenders were called on 11 September for design and construction but it does not appear to have been annoucned who won the contract yet. As Lend Lease are the developers of the large housing estate at the end, they have a significant interest in getting the road built promptly.

I don't know how much spare bridge-building capacity is currently available with the north-south corridor works. This project has at least one, and possibly up to three significant bridges in it to keep the curves as smooth as the concept map shows.

The project web site also has an announcement of an upgrade and traffic lights for the next intersection towards Gawler town centre, near Gawler Green shops.

There was work happening at the intersection of Potts Road and Adelaide Road last time I went through. I guess that is part of the upgrade and realignment as part of this project, too.

It's being built by Lend Lease and leads straight to Lend LEase's development named Springwood. Sounds like a nice advertising tag.

Wouldn't surprise me if this part of Gawler East suburb gets called Spingwood
