All good points. Do you think if it was just to AO [ie 1km] even with bridge re-enforcement needed could it be done by next Oct? And no need for any new trams?

Depends on whether any detailed design and documentation has been done. That generally takes a year from start to finish. The process of getting something through Cabinet and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works takes several months, and do does engaging a design consultant. Then they have to do the design in detail. Then they have to call tenders. So, IF the government said "GO!" today, then they might have 8 months. It's doable. However, as the North Terrace extension showed, things go wrong, so if they don't announce it by the end of March, they don’t have a chance.

On the other hand, if the design has been completed, they should do it easy.

All that having been said, I have no real reason to believe any of these rumours. It's up to the government, and they have not shown any interest in trams.

I agree with your points but note they want to build the AO hotel within the same time-frame and deadline...

If the hotel development is privately funded, the approval processes are different, plus it's already past the announcement stage. Any tram extension has yet to be announced, and I'm not sure if it's anything more than a rumour.

Isn't the left turn from North Tce to KWS only designed for an unloaded tram?

I think they only meant that they didn't plan on using it for passengers (at the time), rather than any structural limitation.

There are four trams chasing each other?

I recall reading somewhere that extensive re-work of the King William street bridge would be needed to run trams over it due to modern engineering standards and hence why it stopped short of AO in the first place. Also with the modern low-floor trams I wonder if they will struggle up the hill to O'Connell street given the angle and curve in the road? Hopefully neither of these are real issues as the quicker they can get the extension up to O'Connell street the better.
Those 'modern engineering standards' are an erroneous requirement - this was based on requirements for heavy rail to go across the bridge.

re. the "loop", I'm just shocked that the transport department has actually thought ahead for once and basically created a special service for a big event. It doesn't happen that much these days...

I'd say if this mad march loop demonstrates strong patronage - it would be a good test case for an extended city loop perhaps.

The timeble for this service is useless. Trams get a 10 to 18 minute layover at the Federal Centre tram stop and another long stopover at Botanic Garden.
This is not conducive to encouraging people to use thisservice.
