Now how on earth was that not heritage listed. How was it allowed to be demolished!

The original station building and platform canopy, pictured here, were demolished in 1963 after years of neglect.

This was its replacement, which closed in 1981: https://www.flickr.com/photos/87616623@N05/9049173322/

Same could be said of the Exhibition Building and the Grand Central Hotel and other treasures.

Who knows, it's just bizarre. Pt. Dock had a very unusual architectural style. Many of the old style manned stations have disappeared in Adelaide - this one amongst them. The train shed was very English with the all over cover. None of this style left in Adelaide. (The closest to the English style is Gawler). I just hope the new one is more that a bus stop style - needs a decent length awning and a W/C block IMHO. LED destinations and much seating. Will have to wait and see.

Most of the best elements of the old station were actually removed or demolished in the early-60s, all that was left was the platforms and a dilapidated version of the front station building.

It’s a miracle that the Formby drinking fountain at the front of these buildings survived the bureaucratic vandalism of the 60s. A replica stands on site and the original is in the Port Adelaide Historical Society Museum at Peterhead. The original base of Mintaro slate and Macclesfield marble is still there under the replica.

I wonder what the cost of rebuilding it, with a modern roof covering the platforms would be..

Its sort of pointless rebuilding it unless it is in the exact same location as the original, and that is not going to happen thanks to the Port Adelaide Police Station and Law Courts.

Best scenario..in 20-30 years the land is now so valuable that a new Port Dock station is rebuilt with apartments overhead as part of a transit orientated development focus in the near area.

What is the point of this? Are people too lazy to walk to the station that is already there.

There's plenty of other things in Port Adelaide that need attention, such as resurfacing the Birkenhead Bridge.

The points of this project are:
- To stimulate (and serve) continued growth in economic activity.
- To encourage development around the station.
- To increase visitor numbers and foot traffic.
- To provide a more accessible, prominent and integrated transport interchange that adds a viable alternative to travelling by car.

I agree. I think though it needs to extend to St Vincent St, even if they need to demolish some of the Magistrates Court Building. One day they could link a tram connecting from here (St Vincent St) over the Nelson St bridge & down Semaphore Rd to the beach.

I think this is a smaller price to pay than extending the tram line down there. That said, the bridge does need to be resurfaced at the very least, if not restored, and that should also be something that the department are looking into.
