What is the value of a new design that deletes the basement, after they have dug the hole?

The basement was in the previous building. They were just removing it.

To be honest, I hope this one doesn't happen. Adelaide finally gets a new tallest (sad but true, something we will be judged by) and we get a student accom building built just metres away. For hotel guests and apartment owners facing North, they'll be looking straight at this thing.... built right on our cultural boulevard. Arguably the finest boulevard in the country.
I got shouted down for having this opinion. The counter argument was “yeah but views are a privilege, not a right waa waa waa” btw.

The building looks crap and always has looked crap. The amendments dont change its badness.

No, the argument is that the Adelaidian can't block a development simply because it blocks their views. Of the building is worthwhile or not is an entirely different question.

Looking at the renders, I have to say I actually like this much more than the Adelaidean. It's sleak, clean, has something of a Manhattan banking tower (a touch of 1970's retro). The Adelaidean is busy, unclear, looks like a cheap 1990s resort hotel, or more like somebody took West Franklin (which is fine for where it is) and put its two towers on top of each other, and that just looks off
And even if you want to talk about 'finest boulevard in the country", (really???), then this (or at least the render) looks like a much better clear, powerful statement than the Adelaidean does, and its perfectly fine for its location.

And even if there are some pretty bad student accommodation buildings (the Adelaidean one....), this and a couple of others are actually pretty good and provide an interesting contrast and diversity in the skyline, so why on earth should we care that this is student accommodation and not some random apartment or office building?

North Terrace is hands down the most elegant, and intact boulevard of 19th/early 20th century buildings in Australia. Adelaide is and should be very proud. I think where some posters, including myself have concerns, is that this building is just a bit...well yes, you put it correctly, 1970's office tower. Fine in another location, just not here, on this prominent corner. Have to admit though, what it replaced, was no beauty either, its just that this is big...and average.

I feel there’s so much crap on North Terrace this isn’t going to take away from the strip, unless the final finishes are piss poor. We have so much worse (Dwell) very visible from North Terrace.
Most buildings west of King William are awful and really need to be looked at if we are to talk about North Terrace being a prominant boulevard.

Which ones are awful, in particular?

The Oaks Embassy, Horizon, EDS (or whatever it's called these days) stretch opposite the Convention Centre is pretty awful, and Urbanest on Bank St is a terrible recent addition. To the east, the John Martins carpark sucks a lot of energy out (particularly due to it's woeful ground level), and the Palais apartments (shit all over, but again a complete mess at ground level and Paxton Walk fucked up as a connection through to Vaughan Pl and Rundle St).

Ok. I like your enthusiasm.

Yep, the Urbanest is pretty bad. For me the Stamford stands out as a shocker on that side of town.

The Oaks buildings don't bother me too much.

But at-least the Stamford is old enough that it's probably due for some kind of a makeover. Unfortunately with a lot of the aforementioned buildings, they're mostly new and won't need a re-treatment for some time. I actually find it strange that they gave 1 KWS a facelift when it was probably one of those rare examples where a building is timeless and it materials don't need to be covered up or replaced...
