[COM] Adelaide Convention Centre - Stage 3 | $350m

#1 Post by AG » Wed Apr 05, 2006 8:10 pm

Well you'll always hear the guys over at railpage complaining about how Adelaide Station has been ruined. For the most part I agree, but in a way the old station did need a interior redesign. Even now it still does, the capacity of the station during peak hour is pathetic.

Balconies on the building would make it even worse. At least the exterior of the building has remained largely untouched after the redevelopment of the area in the late 1980s. It isn't often in Adelaide that there are old buildings significant enough that they should be protected from redevelopment, but Adelaide Railway Station is one of them (at least the exterior facade).

EDIT (August 2013)

True! Bing.

The only bottle neck within the station itself that I've found is getting out the gates. All the other problems are network wide.

I'd really like to see a render before I pass judgement.

For anyone who has the time, under the stairs to North Terrace in the main foyer of the railway station, there's some plans and photos of Adelaide stations past. The one we had now also had plans for a large dome in the middle of the south side of the facade. Pity that didn't get built!

Anyone see this in the tiser today? They had a render of the area in front of the convention centre being flattened and a new flight of stairs going to north terrace. Should be complete by feb before mad march. Looked pretty good actually.

For future reference, the answer to any question that starts with that is usually either money or politics.

It might be because of the Clipsal 500, Womadelaide, Fringe, Adelaide Cup and Easter long weekend.

I don't know the full story on this, but I do know that a major part of the Playhouse's refurbishment has to do with the AFC's commitment to disability access. By all accounts the Playhouse auditorium's original design proved a major hurdle to providing reasonable numbers of wheelchair spaces in a redesign. I peaked in a few weeks ago and saw plastic wrapping on all of the stalls seating.

I don't think this will be a particularly sexy one, but the Playhouse has been looking neglected for years and this should at least make it presentable again.

Although I applaud the idea of activating and breathing some life into the Riverside precinct, I am a little dissapointed by the architecture of the proposal. Although I love the architecture of the Convention Centre, I think it is boring to repeat it and build 2 more replicas of it.

However, i like the new jet-fountain on the Torrens and the activation of the Convention Centres' North Terrace frontage.

Looks like they are planning on building up the western side of the Morphett St bridge as well, curious that the video seems to be very intentionally not pointing down that way.

Is this the first time we have seen how the footbridge over the Torrens is expected to work? Seems it doesn't go all the way to the stadium but rather stops at the riverbank and War Memorial Drive at that point would be a shared pedestrian/car zone.

Great plans, really spruce up the area. Are they building suspended ground connecting the Convention centre with the Morphett street bridge? Seems that way in the video. While they do this, I thik they should also try and incorporate some kind of family/youth orientated entertainment venue which could tie in with the Hotel, like a cinema, bowling centre, intencity type arcade and some boutique shops etc. Probably not enough room and tenants would be too hard to get given the success Adelaide's had with entertainment venues in its CBD, which is weird, but this would be ideal, and they can't go syaing its not the kind of attention they want to attract when they got the city skate park a few metres next door.
