To be fair, the damage to the grass was on the 'undeveloped' southern half of the square. And it actually did look atrocious for weeks after the festival was over.

But there is no reason that the northern half can't be used for a smaller RCC style pop-up in future.

So far there has been many positive comments about the RCC's new location at Pinky Flat. Last night it was at capacity.

Will be interesting to see the crowd numbers during weekedays.

So the ACC's master strategy for vic sq has been reaslised. Running for a whole 4 days over the fringe.

https://www.adelaidefringe.com.au/fringetix/kid-central

I walked past on Friday and was reminded of the Pissweak World series of sketches from The Late Show. A few tents, a shipping container and a couple of signs. Why would you take your kids to the Garden during the day to go on rides and check out everything that's happening there when this is on offer hey?

The southern half of the square is completely fenced off, ironically because the grass is trashed from the TDU village.

Sums it up exactly.

I did try and get into the RCC on Saturday night and it was packed out and the queue was huge. So if the RCC is doing better at Pinky Flat, good for them. Still, a shame for Vic Square.

Victoria Square during the Fringe looks like a sad, motley collection of random, small tents. Such a contrast to when it was occupied by the RCC - a visible statement that the Fringe was in town with its vibrant atmosphere, massive buzz and pedestrian traffic.

Gouger Street was busy early in the evening on the weekend with diners, many, like us heading to Fringe shows nearby. But the absence of the RCC robbed Victoria Square and surrounds of the carnival atmosphere from previous years.

On the Riverbank side, the RCC on Pinky Flat is a huge drawcard, with Adelaide Oval also hosting a large number of events at Live on 5. Adelaide Oval had many Fringe goers streaming in as Redbacks fans were leaving the cricket on the weekend.

Adelaide Oval is a pretty busy place with the Fringe, AO tours (extra visitors from the cruise ship on the w/e), weddings and the roof climb.

The footbridge needs a more regular clean during the Fringe. So many cigarette butts and other *!?*?
Aside from that, the value of the footbridge connecting both sides of the river, shows up time and again.

Update. Adelaide Fringe venues.
Having attended a number of events at various venues in the past fortnight, I think the shift of the RCC to Pinky Flat has been a great success - location-wise. Victoria Square's loss - Riverbank precinct's gain.

RCC is not so constrained by the rectangular site of Victoria Square, has a more interesting and appealing layout with mature trees and an outlook over the river. And fewer Fringe goers running foul of the tram (tracks)!

Some grass watering in evidence - waiting for the ACC response post-Fringe!

The 'Live on Five' at Adelaide Oval, incorporating the upper level with an embedded stage in the Riverbank stand, rooms, restaurant, bar, various food offerings (Village Green style) and a relaxing deck with outlook over the city, adds to the vibe of the precinct. Proximity of the RCC to AO has been of mutual benefit with increased pedestrianization and cross visitation.

RCC and AO Fringe venues - another benefit of the footbridge access and proximity to public transport.

The G.H. Munn elevated garden bar on the Plaza provides a piano bar with champagne, oysters etc. (Note: Aussie beer, cider too). Neat, relaxing, garden-style' surrounds but not so well publicized or attended?
A good idea to try and activate the Plaza. Perhaps a re-think for 2018?

The Palais (Festival attraction) opened last night, adding colour and vibrancy, complementing the Fringe Riverbank activities.

I don't think it was a Fork in the Road, does anyone know what the Friday night food trucks and woo merchants deal was in Victoria Square? It was quite large and attracted a big crowd.
Sorry for the shitty photo, it was hard to get the whole thing in shot and I was in a hurry.

Well well no surprises here, as the saying goes "be careful what you wish for"

I'm also pretty sure one of those businesses was highly critical of RCC in Victoria Square aswell :sly: . Oh well too bad, RCC has been a massive success at Pinky Flat and therefore it will be back there next year. Perhaps these businesses should of retuned their business priorities when RCC was at Victoria Square instead of bitching and complaining.
CBD traders near Victoria Park rue Royal Croquet Club move to Pink Flat as business falls

A YEAR after the Royal Croquet Club was driven out of Victoria Square, city traders now say they are missing the flow-on effects from its former home.

Venues and eateries around the square say the pop-up RCC’s move to the larger Riverbank precinct brought fewer people to the CBD during the festival season.

Damian Peterson, owner of the Metropolitan Hotel on Grote St, said compared with last year, numbers had been down.

Another bar and eatery adjacent to the square, The Taxpayer, also said trade had been down on last year.

“It’s always going to have an impact when there’s thousands of people across the road,” a spokesman said. “It has been a bit down due to those numbers of people not being around.”

The Australian Hotels Association SA branch chief executive, Ian Horne, who previously said the RCC was pulling trade from bricks-and- mortar businesses in the city, said it wasn’t just venues around Victoria Square and Chinatown feeling the pinch.

He said even businesses in surrounding suburbs were suffering, due to the sheer number of licensed events approved by the Adelaide City Council.

“By moving from Victoria Square, with a capacity of 5000 and a closing time of 2am, the council endorsed (RCC) to a capacity of 7000 and trade until 3am, so arguably the impact on the CBD and businesses in the suburbs – it’s exactly the same, if not worse,” he said.

Fringe performers at the Royal Croquet Club when it was at Victoria Square in 2016.
“This isn’t just about the Royal Croquet Club. Adelaide City Council endorsed them at 7000, The Garden at 7000 – both until 3am – Elder Park at 3000 and Gluttony at 3800.

“So there were pop-ups of 21,000 people surrounding the city ... so it has been a particularly flat February and March.”

The RCC’s Stuart Duckworth said it came as no surprise that the move resulted in fewer people visiting surrounding businesses in the CBD.

“It was only a few loud members of the AHA which got misconstrued into being representative of all bricks and mortar in the city – if you ask any vendors along Grote St, or anywhere in the centre – of course it helped their trade, because we brought 200,000 people into the city,” he said.

The city council said there had been extensive consultation over the issue.

Council has worked with businesses to enable them to benefit from events and festivals in the city over the festival season and has supported activation of Victoria Square during the Fringe and Festival.

An Adelaide City Council spokeswoman said: “Council consulted extensively on the criteria associated with the use for Victoria Square, noting it’s the civic heart of the city.

Unbelievable. Everyone knew that was going to happen. Except for obviously some of those businesses.

Maybe these business owners should actually take a business course. How they manage to even stay afloat is beyond me

1st year economics and business in high school could've taught you that was going to happen. Does anyone at the AHA even have a SACE?

Shame the RCC won't happen again. Hopefully someone else has the finances for something like that.

Says who?. Despite the recent dramas, the RCC is still going ahead as planned. There has been no word of cancellation.
