I have made it fairly clear throughout these topics that I am in favour of a city stadium BUT... It's really sad that both political parties can't put the good of SA before their own egos and colloborate on a vision for this state. I know, bipartisanship is a dirty word in politics but both the Labor and Liberals have great ideas, whichever ever party bites the bullet and acknowledges this will most certainly get my vote.... (actually who am I kidding, I'll still vote Greens but the thought was there)

I'm so sick of all this to-ing and fro-ing between ideas and ideas and ideas and ideas. I just hope the best option for SA and the CBD wins in the end.

P.S Casino moving from the Rail station is great news though.

Can't wait to see what the NIMBY's and nay-sayers that haunt these forums have to say about this Casino idea on the torrens...

Any proposal to build a Casino (or anything for that matter) on the current RAH site is ridiculous. Not only would a high-rise hotel look out of place (and most likely be voted down), but we'd have to wait for the hospital to be rebuilt first!

I am not that excited with the new casino proposal. It will just be a building full of poker machines where people go to lose there money. Also the article in the sunday mail had no substance to it at all.....

Take note Rann! Build an entertainment precinct (with casino/hotel) not the Marj and you'll have my vote. On a sidenote, and sorry to get off track, have a read of current Time magazine talking about Obama's first 100 days in office. He has something like 90% approval at the moment, because he listens to the people and has a real vision for a rebuilt America. For about forever and a day, the people of Adelaide especially the young have cried out for a half decent CBD, someone needs to really grab this momentum by the balls and run with it. If Rann can admit he's got it wrong with the Marj, and takes MHS's vision for Riverside he could have another landslide win.

I totally agree with you Howie. But I'm afraid that until Mike Rann begins to listen to people and until Martin Hamilton-Smith stops being so reckless, the younger people of this state haven't really got anywhere to go; except out. That's where I'll be going (unless either MR or MHS change their ways), anyone care to join me?

I'm actually sick and tired of seeing interstate infrastructure copy & pasted over sections of Adelaide, and the advertiser calling it a proposal.
It's disgraceful and embarrassing.
Why do we need a hotel-casino development styled on Melbourne's Crown casino?
Why do we need a federation square style development?
Why can't we have something unique for Adelaide, without these damn comparisons to Melbourne and other cities?

On the issue of a new stadium & bidding for the Commonwealth Games - I was browsing through Google Earth just before and went over the south western section of the city between Sir Don. drv, West Tce & Anzac Hwy.
You know the area were there is a giant cemetery(how fitting for a cbd), and pretty much dead grass & dirt, where the rail line runs through also near Santos & Etsa Park.
If they(either major party - I assume the only interest is from the Libs)are serious about bidding for the com. games, or simply building a new stadium, wouldn't this location be ideal?
Move the interstate rail terminal to the Adelaide station(wasn't it there previously? sorry no interest in trains), and put that existing section in a "trench" with part of it covered(tunnel basically), include a station there. Bring the tram down west tce/or south tce from any number of routes through the CBD too.
Keep the Mile End Home Maker Center & Bunnings next door, while having all other businesse including bus depot between James Congdon Drive/South Road/Richmond Road/Railway Tce relocate to Outer Harbour - there is PLENTY of unused land - maybe keep the RAA offices, or even have RAA move to a new office tower along west tce, heck why not create a new mini cluster of towers around there? 40-60m ultra modern buildings. Scotland road, Railway tce(up to home maker centre), London Rd, Manchester St, Birmingham St, Pymbrah St are all removed. Empty land is turned into tree covered parklands. Parkland groups will have little to complain about.
Get rid of the cemetery, move it to another disused, dead section of the parklands(we have plenty). Build a main stadium there with an athletics track, that could later be used for AFL & cricket via drop in pitch in the centre.. Say 50-60,000. Near by build a a 25,000 rectangular stadium for A League..lets face it Adelaide United have cemented their spot as one of the top teams in the league and there is a good chance there will be regular ACL action, & it has also been proven on big local league games such as vs Sydney, they can get the crowd(see games at Adelaide Oval).
Build a new velodrome on the site too. Upgrade Etsa Park or rebuild, and make a new home for Netball & Basketball in this state.
Don't they call the area around Santos Stadium & Etsa Park the states sports centre? Well why not actually turn it into the states sports centre by bringing the states sporting infrastructure to the area?
I know, just pie in the sky stuff really. But seems more logical than what our politicians are doing, arguing whether a stadium or hospital would be better for the railyards site, which everyone seems to be fixated on. Why not look at OTHER locations? Build the damn hospital, & build a damn stadium too. The two can co-exist, world peace!

disrespectful to say the least. this is such an important piece of our state's history. i have dozens of relative's buried there also.

I bet you've never met half of them, so I can't see the attachment you would have. I know I have no attachment to relatives who died long before I was born.
I'm not sure if you know this Mants, but if you don't pay to keep that spot where say for example an uncle is buried, they reuse it for another deceased person. Of course this is like 50 or 90 years or something later.
I'm not sure if a cemetery has ever 'relocated', it was just a thought. I guess they'd move the head stones and continue the lease on new plots?

Well, burial should be made illegal first; and we should all have to be cremated...

Rev, has it occurred to you that all the businesses you want to relocate for this venture, are privately owned?

Could you please vacate your house, I have something in mind that I want to do somewhere in the parklands, and I thought I might placate the Parklands Preservation Society by offering them space for a park at your place. That'd be OK, wouldn't it?

Fair enough.
But I look at it this way. Both major parties are looking only at two sites, railyards and RAH.
Labor want to build a hospital on the railyards and turn the RAH into a fed square type precinct.
Liberals want to build a stadium and fed square style precinct on railyards and redevelop RAH.
Neither party is offering any other choice.
We have all these parklands that are never used(except by the homeless I pressume).
I might vote for an Independent in 2010, if Labor doesn't surprise me.

Obviously it occurred to me. It occurred to the government as well when they planned the south road/anzac highway underpass and bought out the surrounding properties. Wasn't a clinic also bought out?
I'm sure they could also help them with relocation.

That's the problem in this state/city.
Oh, we can't do that because of such and such.
That's why we lag behind, why no world renowned unique architecture or engineering feats have been completed in Adelaide. Why our buildings are just boring straight lines.
