Well said Nort. I would just add that I believe Adelaide has its own market that is unique compared to the rest of Australia, we should use that to our advantage more.

Official opening is today.

And to coincide comes the announcement that GE Healthcare is now interested in a nuclear medicine facility in the precinct, as well as a possible 'Bio-analytical Centre of Excellence'. And part of the deal also has them hosting an "international scientific conference" in Adelaide every year. This is seriously the start of a major change for Adelaide.

ADELAIDE'S jockeying to be a world centre of health excellence takes a double leap forward today with healthcare giant GE Healthcare signing on to create a nuclear medicine facility on the embryonic North Terrace biomedical precinct.

It comes as Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Premier Jay Weatherill today open the $200 million South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) building as the first of a series in the biggest health and biomedical greenfield site in the southern hemisphere.

Along with the new Royal Adelaide Hospital and new buildings housing university teaching and research facilities the precinct is primed to bring research dollars and brains to Adelaide.

SAHMRI already has won more than $18 million in research grants this year and is ready to build on the reputation for excellence in SA research, with a strong emphasis on turning academic ideas into cures and treatments which also will return money to South Australia.

Health Minister Jack Snelling said a new five-year agreement had been reached between the State Government, SAHMRI and GE Healthcare which would cement the state's growing reputation as a leader in health research.

The deal will see training and education program for nuclear medicine and biomedical engineering and collaborations focusing on oncology and neurological, although no figures on the amount involved or where it will be housed has yet been released.

More: Lift-off for health flagship

"We want South Australia to be one of the world leaders in health-related research," Mr Snelling said.

"It is an ambitious goal but one we think is possible and this announcement is a major step forward in having South Australia's health industry leading the pack.

"This year alone SAMHRI has attracted over $18 million of new investment into South Australia and agreements like the one we have signed with GEHC only increase that investment potential.

Economy: $277m return predicted

North Tce: Property/Construction boom on the way

"We are in the process of building the largest health and biomedical precinct in the Southern Hemisphere - the health industry is a growth industry in South Australia and we want to keep it.

Meanwhile the strange shape and reptilian outer skin of spikes triangular windows has already inspired a host of creative names. VOTE for your pick .

As part of the deal GE Healthcare also has committed to hosting an international scientific conference in Adelaide each year, putting an international focus on the city.

SAHMRI executive director Professor Steve Wesselingh said a successful working relationship has already been established with GE Healthcare through the commissioning of the first cyclotron in South Australia, housed in the new SAHMRI building.

Video: A model of leading architectural design

"Next month our research teams will begin moving into our new flagship research facility, where we will house and run the cyclotron," Prof Wesselingh said.

"We will work together to develop a world-class training and education facility for nuclear medicine and biomedical engineering technology.

"This will enable us to build a South Australian-based workforce that will help drive the creation of the next generation of healthcare technology.

Smashing Cancer: SA's own cyclotron

GE Healthcare also is evaluating a Bio-analytical Centre of Excellence at the North Terrace precinct.

I made the mistake of going to the AdelaideNow link and reading the comments. Three outstandingly ignorant comments, talking South Australia down. One claiming that it will be an "empty glass Taj Mahal", despite the fact it's already tenanted and SAHMRI2 is planned. Interestingly the news.com.au had no comments.

Will be interesting to see if Tony Abbott reaffirms Commonwealth funding for the next two planned facilities of our emerging health precinct while here opening the first, given this funding was first secured as sweetener for signing up to the Gonski reforms that his Minister Pyne is now determinedly tearing apart.

@ Monotonehell.

Don't worry about the naysayers over at Adelaide Now. They're just a bunch of trolls from a certain political party who buzz around that site like a bunch of blowflies around a cowpat.
This city is rocking. This building is awesome. The lights on top of the building are flashing tonight - compliments the lit-up Adelaide Oval and the Convention/Festival centres beautifully. As a community we've got a lot to be proud of right now....with heaps more to come.

Welcome to the forums, mate. Good first post. :P

You're definitely right, this building is awesome. I had no idea that there were lights on top of the building that were for this. Come to think of it, if this building were to be empty at night, it would probably look amazing if someone pointed a mssive spotlight on it and allowed the light to refract it at some awesome looking angles!

Imagine how kick-ass this would look while drunk on New Years Eve on the correct angle? Perhaps while standing on the Torrens Bridge for NYE 2014-15? :D

Do you know any details of upcoming developments in the medical precinct - where they will be , how high, what will be in them etc etc?. Seems Nth Tce is booming...and for a long time to come. The overall development is bigger than Royal Brisbane. Spoke to someone from there yesterday - did not like that the new RAH would be bigger and FAR better! Seems there is a competitive spirit abroad here.

Interesting article on the parametric design of the iconic SAHMRI building, environmental sustainability and how this building is putting Adelaide on the map.

Transforming the city with sustainable design
Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, has the potential to be a living laboratory for experiments in green urbanism.
...
Adelaide is on a trajectory to become an ecologically sustainable city but it needs more outstanding green architecture and low-carbon precincts.

Here's a couple of photos I shot of SAHMRI this afternoon. I really need to go back and take some shots from this angle in the early morning and get the sun reflecting off the glass.

I thought I would share a few photos that I took tonight as I felt it quite nicely showed the progress in the West End.

I usually only see this building from the Morphett Street Bridge, so I often forget it is quite pointy at the ends.
