Adelaide first: Public transport users get free Wi-Fi


Sydney bus passengers enjoying free wi-fi on its network ... Adelaide Metro is eyeing a December rollout.

FREE Wi-Fi will be available across the Adelaide Metro public transport network — including trains, buses, trams, and some railway stations and interchanges — from December.
The State Government is calling for expressions of interest to operate the free Wi-Fi network, extending the service from that already available on the city’s fleet of 20 trams.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said the service would be a popular addition for passengers who wished to work while commuting and those who wanted to stay informed or entertained on their journey.
“We are always looking for ways to improve the public transport experience and encourage more people to catch our buses, trains and trams,’’ he said.
“What we’re seeking is high-quality and reliable internet access which is simple and easy to use.
“This initiative will make it more enjoyable to use public transport for the almost 70 million passengers who use Adelaide Metro services each year with approximately 80 per cent of those passengers travelling on buses.
“Rather than spending their commute behind the wheel of the car, public transport passengers can use the time to catch up on their favourite TV show, surf social media, read an online magazine or newspaper or catch up on emails without chewing through their data package.”
The State Government commitment follows a successful 2012 trial of bus-based Wi-Fi.

Noticed a new digital bus stop has been placed on King William St, opposite the Town Hall.

More than likely we will see alot more of these rolled out in the city.

mproved access for public transport customers will be provided to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital

This includes a temporary bus shuttle, new bus stops and re-routed existing services in the lead up to the opening of the new hospital in the city’s West End on 5 September 2017.
Shuttle bus service

A new bus shuttle service on North Terrace will connect the old and new Royal Adelaide Hospital sites from next month operating every:
30 minutes between 7.15am and 7.15pm weekdays
8.15am to 6.15pm weekends
Until January 2018 when the AdeLINK City Tram Extension is due to be completed which will be within the FREE city tram zone that runs between the South Terrace tram stop and the Entertainment Centre. All Adelaide Metro Trams are wheelchair, scooter and assistance dog friendly.
Other public transport changes:

Re-routing the primary Hills bus route 864 to operate in loop from Currie Street to the new hospital via Morphett Street and North Terrace. Services from the city will commence from the new hospital at stop Y1 North Terrace and proceed via Currie Street from Sunday 3 September
C1 services and C2 O-Bahn services will be re-routed from Sunday 3 September. These will travel via their normal route along Grenfell/Currie streets and then via Morphett Street and North Terrace, stopping opposite the hospital at bus stop Y1 North Terrace. Services from the city will commence from stop Y1 North Terrace and travel via West Terrace, Currie Street and then via normal route
New bus stops will be installed on Currie Street and North Terrace to service the hospital
Updated bus timetables are being finalised and will be available soon

Possibly, but only in the next major overhaul once the O-bahn tunnel and city-tram extensions are open.

Smartphone public transport ticket trial to begin

NEWS
The State Government is set to begin trialling a new public transport ticketing system which will allow passengers to replace physical tickets and cards with their smartphones.

Departmental staff will conduct the two-month internal trial, beginning on Friday, using two different apps, both of which would allow passengers to buy tickets any time and anywhere before getting onto a bus, tram or train.

Under the system, passengers would simply need to “tap” their smartphone on boarding to validate their virtual ticket.

The Government says it will consider introducing the technology across the Adelaide Metro network – alongside the current ticket systems – if the trial results are positive and if a survey, also being launched this week, shows sufficient demand.
