I'm not opposed to trees in the park. Its just that given the prominence of the Festival Center and this precinct in general... iconic for Adelaide , the city gardening managers need to get better at framing views in high profile areas. Scrappy trees left to their own devices since planting do not achieve this. The trees are as much a part of the architecture and the buildings themselves.

Issue seems to be the way the trees have been looked after then?

I personally love the number of native trees in areas like this, for an area trying to attract tourists and visitors it's so very Australian.

There's a real level of cultural cringe some people seem to have, wanting things to look like a European city. We're Australia, should play that up.

But the problem is that most eucalyptus trees with their typically sparse and high canopies offer very little in the way of shade compared to many introduced deciduous trees. I'm all for natives in much of the parklands and rural/semi-rural areas but in urban areas I think there are far better options for shading footpaths and places where people gather.

Compare walking along the Plane tree lined Pathway of Honour between Government House and the parade ground, or the stretch of North Terrace terrace between KWS and Lot 14, and many of the gum tree lined footpaths through the parklands which are stinking hot by comparison despite being in the middle of a huge park.

I've also noticed many councils increasingly using gum trees along footpaths and question the sense in doing this if the end goal is to provide a shaded walkway for pedestrians and to reduce the urban heat island effect. I suspect a lot of it is as much about the political optics of planting natives, natives and more natives as opposed to trees which are actually fit for their primary purpose.

The newly redeveloped Woodville Road is a great example - what's needed here to activate the street is trees which provide great shade. The eucalyptus trees which have been planted will not do that anywhere near as well as, for example, London Plane trees.

I know there's a much larger discussion over habitat and food for native fauna but I think the wholesale move away from non-native trees is a mistake in many inner urban applications.

It's also not a great idea to be lining a busy pedestrian route with trees which have an awful habit of randomly dropping branches (last night I narrowly avoided one on the linear path near the Par 3 carpark entrance). Surely there are other natives we can plant that aren't gum trees.

It's funny I would never really notice these gum trees in that location until someone pointed it out, even though i've probably seen them hundreds of times

I wonder how those particular trees have managed to survive all these years. I like it THB

if you want to see how destructive eucalyptus gum trees are to infrastructure, go for a drive up Brighton Road.

You’ve also got to remember that a lot of so-called native trees are from nowhere near Adelaide in the first place. A tree native to Queensland or Western Australia isn’t necessarily going to fit into the local ecosystem any better than one from overseas.

I don’t reckon there has been a wholesale move away from planting non-native street trees, but there has been a shift to planting a lot of small non-native trees like crepe myrtles which are pretty useless for providing shade. I reckon that trend is probably motivated by councils wanting to save on maintenance costs and residents who complain about big trees being dangerous or dropping leaves etc.

There probably has been a trend towards native plantings in parks, but in most cases this is a good thing, especially where it is proper ecosystem revegetation based on what grew locally.

I couldn't give a damn about tourists. We have to live here, not them.
