VIS? New SA Pathology HQ, 14,000sqm
Business case for new SA Pathology laboratory
22 April 2020
This afternoon the Premier Steven Marshall and the Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade announced that the government will look at opportunities to strengthen SA Pathology going into the future.
This follows their announcement this morning that SA Pathology will remain in public ownership.
Several months ago SA Pathology provided the Government with a concept paper for a purpose-built laboratory to optimise their metropolitan lab network. The Government has considered this paper recently given their increased confidence in SA Pathology’s ability to plan and execute.
Over the next six months SA Pathology will develop a business case to firm up the benefits of building a new flagship laboratory of about 14,000 square metres, built in close proximity to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
This will release up to 8,000 square metres of prime hospital space for direct clinical use.
Other benefits include further improving our efficiency and service, to facilitate and enhance multi-disciplinary team meetings, and to further enhance our contribution to research and training. It will also remove approximately 1,000 courier movements from the hospital precinct.
This is very exciting news for SA Pathology, and it ensures we can continue to put the patient at the centre of everything we do.
On behalf of all staff, we would like to thank the State Government and the Department for Health and Wellbeing for their strong commitment and support of
SA Pathology which will enable us to continue to deliver world-class pathology services to all South Australians.
Regards,
Mark McNamara
Executive Director
SA Pathology
Dr Tom Dodd
Clinical Service Director

I wonder if the former HQ/Heaven/New Market site is ideal or will be looked at since their looking at something close to the RAH.

Great news. Also funny how quickly the Government’s privatisation agenda for them stopped when they proved how essential they are in recent times
Re: VIS? New SA Pathology HQ, 14,000sqm
just too much political headache and paperwork for the gain that would come out of it....gnrc_louis wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 5:51 pmGreat news. Also funny how quickly the Government’s privatisation agenda for them stopped when they proved how essential they are in recent times
Now where do they find 14,000 sqm for space close to the new RAH? Or is that essentially just adding another wing/building/annex on to the RAH?

Wasn't the proposed office building for the Heaven/HQ site roughly 14,000sqm? Kind of makes sense considering it has been decided the W&C Hospital will be next-door to the RAH and not opposite.floplo wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 6:03 pmjust too much political headache and paperwork for the gain that would come out of it....gnrc_louis wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 5:51 pmGreat news. Was there an office proposal, I only remember that Twin residential tower plan viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5666 ?Patrick_27 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 8:43 pmWasn't the proposed office building for the Heaven/HQ site roughly 14,000sqm? But yes, the site would be the most logical one, could even give them the possibility to create a footbridge to the RAH.

That's the one! ^ Sorry, getting my proposals and square metres mixed up, but the above seems like the best option! Dependant on what UniSA are doing re: touted campus restructures (closing Magill, etc) they could look at taking up what's left of this building once SA Path have moved in.gnrc_louis wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:20 pmWasn't the office proposal included in Enigma 8: https://www.woodsbagot.com/projects/enigma-8/floplo wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:59 pmWas there an office proposal, I only remember that Twin residential tower plan viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5666 ?Patrick_27 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 8:43 pmWasn't the proposed office building for the Heaven/HQ site roughly 14,000sqm? FWIW the Adelaide Uni AHMS building is a bit over 40,000m2, so whatever gets built will be about 1/3 the size of that. Ideally it should probably only be 2-4 stories tall so that analysis instruments can all be co located on the same floors for automated processing.
Re: VIS? New SA Pathology HQ, 14,000sqm
I assume they can't fit it into SAHMRI 2, and going anywhere near the train tracks is likely not good idea either (or am I underestimating how easy it is to isolate external influences away?), so proximity-wise North/West Terrace it is.Listy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 9:27 amFWIW the Adelaide Uni AHMS building is a bit over 40,000m2, so whatever gets built will be about 1/3 the size of that. Re: VIS? New SA Pathology HQ, 14,000sqm
I suppose you possibly could fit it into SAHMRI2 - after all the dental hospital got shoehorned into AHMS at the last minute and the rest of the building just had to lump the unexpected loss of 3 floors. It's turned out OK, except the dental school has no proper public entrance. So if the existing SAHMRI2 stakeholders can be convinced to give up 3-4 floors, then it might happen that way. It's ideal as far as access is concerned & SAHMRI2 hasn't started yet, so if the building needs modifications to the pilings etc, there's still time to do that.floplo wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 4:38 pmI assume they can't fit it into SAHMRI 2, and going anywhere near the train tracks is likely not good idea either (or am I underestimating how easy it is to isolate external influences away?), so proximity-wise North/West Terrace it is.Listy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 9:27 amFWIW the Adelaide Uni AHMS building is a bit over 40,000m2, so whatever gets built will be about 1/3 the size of that. As for train tracks and associated vibrations, the Crick institute in London was built in 2015 and is almost right on top of one of London's busiest stations, St Pancras. It is built on floating slabs that dampen vibrations to protect sensitive equipment, so it can be done. AHMS was not built like this, so most of the really vibration sensitive equipment stayed at Frome Road.
(The Crick Institute is a model of how things could have been done better in our biomed precinct - it cost about the same as our 3 Nth Tce buildings but has about twice the lab floor area (including a bunch of level 3 & 4 biosafety labs that would be REALLY REALLY handy right now). Most importantly 1 building means a single unified governing & managment structure, so you dont get the access conflicts that occasionally mess researchers around. (It's not normally deliberate, but for example if you want access to each building, it means 3 sets of building & safety inductions, so you lose 3 weeks of time to training instead of 1. That's a big deal if you're a student with only about 12 weeks set aside do to all the lab work for your course.))

If it is early enough to upgrade the footings, then nobody needs to give up any space - just add four more floors to the building for the new tenant.Listy wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2020 9:19 amI suppose you possibly could fit it into SAHMRI2 - after all the dental hospital got shoehorned into AHMS at the last minute and the rest of the building just had to lump the unexpected loss of 3 floors. Putting it on the other side of North Terrace also has attractions, and could be in a building big enough to move whatever you said is still on Frome Road, and if the Dental Hospital is shoehorned into somewhere it doesn't really fit, perhaps that could be planned into a new space in the next building, too.
