Doesn't have to be a massive multiplex (which wasn't the plan anyway) but a boutique cinema complex on the upper floors would have been great and given more impetus for night-time trading at the centre.

Also shown is the removal of the Vic Dr slip lane and how that area will now be used for bikes to transition across to the east or continue around to the new shared path to the north.
Hallelujah! I've had more near misses at that slip lane then anywhere else in the city.

Re: News & Discussion: Cycling

Not sold on the flexy posts, and don't know why it's taken years and years for that to be the solution. But I guess it at least stops drivers stopping in the bike lane like they do now. Is there anything in the plans to have a proper connection between the bikeway and the linear path (that isn't car...

One good thing to come out of this is push back on façadism as a way of maintaining heritage. Wearing the old building as a skin, and gutting everything past 30cm deep has always felt like such a minimum effort approach, and implies that heritage is about what something looks like on the surface and...

The Cranker is also an important venue for bands starting off. No one goes from practicing in a garage to selling out shows at Thebarton Theatre, or even The Gov or Lion Arts. The types of venues with suitable size stages and an audience for starting artists has diminished to a very small number an...

Out of all the buildings in that area, the Intercontinental is the only building in my opinion that has aged the best. If its re-clad or repainted, it will only age quicker and require more maintenance. A good clean is all it needs but I do fear with its upcoming refurbishment that it will be turne...

It's also not a great idea to be lining a busy pedestrian route with trees which have an awful habit of randomly dropping branches (last night I narrowly avoided one on the linear path near the Par 3 carpark entrance). Surely there are other natives we can plant that aren't gum trees.

Not to mention that the facade was the least of the problems. They haven't even touched the mess that is the escalator layout.

I passed by the old gas works site at Bowden yesterday and there is some sprinkler pipe all around the site at the top fence railing height which was venting off some obnoxious gases.
The misters aren't venting the gasses, it's for suppressing the smells and dust.

The article touches on light access, but there's also the issue of services — particularly plumbing — as well as differences in ceiling heights. The sentiment is good, but the reality is very few office buildings are suitable for retrofitting into residential.

A lot of people seem to forget how bleak and boring the original festival plaza was with its painted concrete cubes and the camouflaged car park exhaust stack and the leaky car park. It was even more boring in winter. I loved the Hajek Plaza, but it was compromised from the start (gardens and water...

Agreed, and it's a massive shame that absolutely nothing from that masterplan has been implemented. I'd add to that list, progress on connecting the different parks by grade separating pedestrian links from the roads that cut across, with the eventual goal of being able to circle the entire city wit...
