Re: News & Discussion: Electricity Infrastructure
I think the next fight will be when Wind farms inevitably improve and need less space. The space required for a wind farm, ignoring geography of the area for a moment, is dictated by the height of the turbine and the length of the blades. Turbines are getting taller as technology increases, which i...

Re: The Housing Crisis
A hundred or more years ago, a four-six room house was home for 6-10 people. Now, a typical household is less than three people - smaller families, single parents, family breakups, people aging in place all contribute to this. Fewer people per household means we need more houses for the same number ...

Re: News & Discussion: Electricity Infrastructure
The "problem" is that the load of electricity demand is not constant. The demand drifts up and down on a daily basis as people go about daily business, factories and shopping centres operate only in daytime, etc. The annual cycle includes heaters in winter and airconditioners in summer. Wi...

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains
The apartments aren't sinking. That's completely bullshit. However, what they are prone to is king tides during freak weather events where a storm surge coincides with a high tide event, the whole of the inner Port Adelaide harbour is at risk of flooding. It's in a "red zone", the only wo...

Re: Sewer Vents
Is this list some kind of indicator of where the major mains are? I noted near me some suburbs have zero, and others have lots, often along the same street.

Re: News & Discussion: National Broadband Network
Was going to get fibre but the nbn will pay for my driveway to be cut up but I will need to pay for it to be redone. :wallbash: I converted from Fibre-to-the-Node to Fibre-to-the-Home a few months ago. Despite the node having been a few hundred metres away, apparently most of the fibre was installe...

Re: The Housing Crisis
Why average it? Why not look at the whole amount each year. The issue isn't just how many are coming or have come. The other part of it is where are they living. Are they all living in student accom. towers? Doubtful, there's certainly not enough room for them all. So they're out in the wider commu...

Re: The Housing Crisis
At the beginning of 2023 (the period for that data), how much vacant student accommodation was there? Net overseas migration in 2023 seems to be a pointless statistic it should be averaged from the beginning of 2020 to account for COVID. Why average it? Why not look at the whole amount each year. T...

Do the tracks still go through Kromer Crossing, or did they get covered with bitumen after the line stopped being used? Kromer Crossing has been ripped up and replaced with a roundabout. The line is still in place either side of the crossing though - trains could be reinstated as far as Tanunda wit...

This is an interesting one. 'Yartapuulti' means 'place of death or sleep'. https://content.api.news/v3/images/bin/a99a821bc378df3c06a4f12c250c3162?width=1024 It's apparently the traditional name for Port Adelaide according to the Yartapuulti/Port Adelaide Football Club. https://www.portadelaidefc.c...

I'll give you three guesses to what might have caused global gas prices to rise... https://i.imgur.com/NNgacr7.png Well, obviously, it couldn't have been Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Because if that were the case, the present high prices of electricity would be due to Russia. Not renewables. we bec...

Re: News & Discussion: Electricity Infrastructure
A couple of posters have suggested that the high price of electricity in SA is due to renewables. So I thought I'd do a comparison of US States to see if that was valid for there at least. I took ten states with highest renewables percentage and compared them to prices. I've listed the states and t...
