Im pretty sure the ADL - MEL flight corridor is up there with some of the busiest routes in the world. Any potential HSR would have a fairly significant commuter base. Of course its all just a pipe dream.

#47 in the world by number of seats (according to Wikipedia) but barely more than a third of Sydney to Melbourne. As for the commuter base, I don't know about Ballarat to Melbourne but there aren't yet many people commuting between the Murraylands and Adelaide. But build it and they will come!

would do Sydney and Melbourne.

A fair chunk, yes, but still very much in the minority. And the number of passengers on international flights to and from Sydney is nearly double that of Melbourne.
