Adelaide 2022 Youth Olympics

#1 Post by crawf » Thu Aug 09, 2012 3:00 am

Now that it's likely the Commonwealth Games wont come to Adelaide until at least 2030 and it's very very unlikely we will ever see an Adelaide Olympics in our lifetime. Maybe it could be a wise move to bid for the smaller event 'Youth Olympics' that will still give the city much craved international exposure.

Snapshot of the first 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore
Athletes - 3,517
Teams - 207
Events - 206 (26 sports)

The next Youth Olympics will be held in Nanjing 2014, while the 2018 host city is still yet to be annouced. Though it would be pointless to bid for the 2018 games as there is already strong competition from Glasgow, Buenos Aires, Rotterdam etc. So 2022 is our perfect chance, it will give Adelaide enough time to create a strong bid.

Not to mention by 2022, our train network should be entirely electrified (excluding Belair), improved riverbank precinct and possibly another major upgrade to South Road etc. Making Adelaide a much more accessible and improved city for hosting major events.

Rough list for venues

Adelaide Oval - Opening / Closing Ceremony, Athletics
SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre - Aquatics (Swimming, Diving)
Adelaide Entertainment Centre - Gymnastics
State Hockey Centre - Hockey
New Basketball Centre at Mile End - Basketball
Adelaide Festival Centre - Weightlifting
Adelaide Convention Centre - Taekwondo, Fencing, Boxing
West Lakes - Rowing
Victoria Park - Equestrian
Adelaide CBD / Glenelg - Triathlon
New Riverbank Tennis Arena - Tennis
Adelaide Showgrounds - Judo, Badminton, Table Tennis, Football
Eagle On The Hill / Adelaide CBD - Cycling

I'm missing a few sports, but gives you an idea at where some of these events could be held. I really do believe that if we don't act soon, another Australian city will try to lure the Youth Olympics to their city.

Thoughts?

Definitely like the idea. Would perhaps be a sort of 'audition' for hosting the Commonwealth Games.

Also sounds exactly like the sort of event Adelaide would host awesomely, then later on one of the eastern states would host it, pretend like it was something new, and proceed to totally f**k the whole thing up!
It's = it is; its = everything else.
You're = you are; your = belongs to.
Than = comparative ("bigger than"); then = next.
