For what it's worth, it looked reasonably popular yesterday evening as I rode through (as did the new Home Ground cafe/restaurant/bar at the base of the new Convention Centre building).

I know your intentions are good, but this is a gimmick I'm sorry to say. Sand should be at the beach where it belongs not on a riverbank near a stagnant lake! Our Surf Life Saving Clubs (and beaches) would've been better off with the money wasted here, even if it was only a small amount. Any money helps. Anyhow, there are plenty of other great suggestions for the riverbank either side of the river, and I'm talking about serious stuff. That's what needs to be done if Adelaide wants to be a player in the big time. Let's try again shall we...?

Why don't we wait and see how well patronised it is before we write it off as a gimmick and money wasted? How is this any different to any other event held on the riverbank like RCC, Lola's Pergola etc? If it's popular and well-received then where's the problem?

Barrio and Lola's were festival clubs. They're only mean to last the length of the festival of arts, and change with each iteration. The Palais was/is the current incarnation. The Urban Beach may have opened in time for the cricket, but it will run until the end of January. Not everything needs to be permanent to justify it's existence. Ephemeral events and destinations can and do keep things interesting.

This is just an excuse to not do the area up properly with something permanent.

Or it’s a pop up activation to trial something that could be made permanent.

Went to Home Ground a week ago for lunch, as well as the Urban Beach. The fit out is really nice, and the food was reasonably good.

RenewalSA is not shying away from the fact Urban Beach is a pilot trial. There are surveys (both written and those 4 face button ones) all over the place asking whether it should be made permanent (and which elements should be improved/expanded on).

I haven't visited Urban Beach, is it getting a lot of people in?

When we went it was pretty busy, although there was additional things set up for the tennis world challenge kids day. Obviously the splash pool is pretty popular with the young ones.

It's getting a lot of mentions on ShitAdelaide.

I hope there's a bit of financial support behind the stuff opening around the convention centre as it seems it could take some time for the zone to become popular. I've been riding past daily and the area still feels like the sleepy park it always has been... probably not aided by the amount of civil works surrounding the area lol.

Such a fantastic space but going to take some time before crossing north terrace (outside of an event) becomes normalised; the early openers might need to haemorrhage some cash in the meantime to see it through.

They're all owned by the Convention Centre. They money times will be when conferences are on, or events (be they at the Convention Centre, Elder Park, or at Adelaide Oval).

You'd think they'd open up and put on extra staff during the footy season for game days/nights.

I can see you've taken two of my ideas. The bus terminal west of the Morphett Street Bridge and an access road from War Memorial Drive at the weir to the NRAH. In my vision it's a bus interchange, where people can move from trains to buses and vice versa. The access road (which I mentioned on this forum years ago) would be used only for emergency services (ambulances, police, SES and fire) to/from the NRAH and North Terrace.

Although I have many comments I'll just make one observation. The underground rail line running under the convention centre, old station building, casino and Parliament House, etc., in your vision may not be possible or very hard to implement. This idea should have been built before the 70s when there was the opportuntiy to tunnel under or around the old Railway Station building. Since then the Festival Centre and ASER (original Hyatt Regency, Riverside Centre and the first convention centre building) have been built over the railway station platforms. You still have two possible corridors. One under North Terrace, the other along the banks of the Torrens (major work there if ever) with tunneling starting somewhere just past the NRAH and before the Uni buildings. There are other alternatives of course but these are the only ones that pass the NRAH and travel through or close by the Adelaide Railway Station in an east-west/west-east configuration.

Anyhow, good seeing you posting ideas. Keep it up.
