Howie's Kuala Lumpur pics (not 56k halal)

#1 Post by Howie » Sat Mar 01, 2008 11:16 am

Well i'm back from holidays guys... time for the photospam.

Image
Once the top dog of scrapers.. Petronas Twin Towers.

Image

Image
Can you believe the Sultan of Brunei just bought out the left tower? The whole thing!

Image
KL Tower (Menaras)... my favourite building in KL. The absolute best view you can get from the revolving restaurant.. not too bad at around ~$30aud per head buffet.

Image
Independence Square... Besides independence day celebrations taking place here, it was also the scene of atrocities during WWII with many chinese beheaded by the japanese at the time. Some say you can still hear screams during the night.

Image
Telecom Malaysias new hq.

Image
Sunway Pyramid. Though not 5000 years old, it does have some excellent shopping here :)

Image

Image
Inside pyramid there's a ground floor ice skating ring. It was good to see the kids having fun.

Image
Eye on Malaysia

Image
KL Skyline has brought millions of tourists and created an entire hotel industry.. anything fronting the towers is top dollar. Something for Kevin Foley to take a note of.

Image
Long Exposure shot of Eye

Image
Massive Hindi statue plated with pure gold. Took four years to make.

Image

Image
Genting Highlands

Image
This buddhist cave was built by the late Genting Highland boss - affectionately known to the locals as Uncle Lim.

Image
The padoga constructed by uncle lim, was the first place Uncle Lim would stop by on the way to his casino.

Image
The temple grounds and Genting Highlands entertainment in the background.

Image
Model in Genting foyer.. built by my brother in law Alan.

Image

Image
Inside Genting they've got venice.

Image
Streets of rome to the left.

Image
Times Square to the north.

Image
A theme park .... and of course there's the Genting casino (but they don't advertise that prominently in the islamic country) the main reason everyone travels so far to get here is to gamble..

Chinese acrobat team performing.

Looks like you had a brilliant time over in Malaysia. Did you visit anywhere else other than KL and the Genting Highlands areas?

I'm sure 3 weeks isn't enough to explore the entire Malaysia hey Howie?

You have yet to explore the northern states (Langkawi, an island found by the then prime minister and developed from ground up into a popular tourist destination, also a duty-free zone in Malaysia!), and the far eastern state, Sabah, with stunning resorts and stunning beaches.

Nice photos, Mr. Howie. I particularly love the Malaysians' use of coloured lighting on their buildings in all sorts of combinations and designs - it makes such a positive difference.

One thing i loved about the Twin Towers was that at night no matter where you were, you always knew where the towers were even if you couldn't see them.. that's because the clouds directly above them are lit a bright white like it was day time.

Re: Howie's Kuching pics (not 56k halal)

Yep you're right Edgar... how about some from your hometown ?

This is Kuching - The Cat's City. - Located in East Malaysia, Population 500,000 (but you wouldn't know it, by the great night life)
Image
Colonial Architecture littered by early British colonists.
Image
Old and the new
Image
Horn Bill bird is symbolic to Sarawakians, in the background classy James Brooke restaurant named after the early colonist who founded the city.

Here's an Adelaide connection.. an Adelaidian architect designed the Kuching waterfront

New construction over waterfront
Image
Massive Australian Swinburne University campus... UniSA & Flinders take note - I saw every aussie uni advertised in Malaysia except our South Australian ones. We've got a while to go if we want to be an education state.
Image
Civic Centre.. great views of the City from here.

I loved Kuching, it's very much like Adelaide - and I could imagine the two cities could learn alot from each other. There is a lot of connection here with Adelaide, the Chief Minister's (equivalent of Premier) wife is an Adelaidian.. and the CM also owns Adelaide Hilton hotel. There's stacks of nightlife there, and everything is relatively mid-high rise in Kuching even though the city has half the population. Shops open till really late into the evening, with food stalls running almost around the clock. Highways and road infrastructure is very good, interchanges are being built everywhere right now. Quite a few ex-pat Adelaidians living around here, some of them in politics.. would be good to get them to visit Adelaide one time.
