2012 ADELAIDE FESTIVAL - 2-18 March
Adelaide Festival marked its transition to an annual event last night at a stellar launch featuring details of the program’s world and Australian premieres.

Over 17 days from Friday, March 2 to Sunday, March 18, Adelaide Festival will feature 68 events, including 37 world premieres and 62 Australian premieres in 386 performances from 970 international and Australian artists.

Program highlights include the Australian premiere of A Streetcar, Krzysztof Warlikowski’s play based on Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Name Desire, starring French screen legend Isabelle Huppert; Tony Award winning British actor Jonathan Pryce in Harold Pinter’s masterwork The Caretaker; and French master of theatrical spectacle James Thiérrée, performing his new large-scale fantastical solo work Raoul.

Asia’s leading contemporary dance company, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, presents a beautiful performance inspired by traditional Chinese calligraphy, Water Stains on the Wall; legendary Italian film composer Ennio Morricone, the maestro behind Cinema Paradiso and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, will lead the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, six Italian soloists and a massed choir in a spectacular outdoor performance; and US baritone Jubilant Sykes leads a company of 200 performers and musicians in Leonard Bernstein’s masterpiece Mass.

The full program is available now at Adelaide Festival website.

This caught my eye, the 2013 Adelaide Festival is having 10 nights of festivities in the oft ignored and blighted Hajek Square! March 2 looks interesting - bunga bunga!!

$5 entry each night.
The program for the Adelaide Festival’s late night party hub Barrio mixes the best of local and international musical revelry over its 10 nights at Hajek Plaza, which kicks off on Friday, March 1.

Barrio was a massive success for the Adelaide Festival last year, as its concept of underground bands and DJs along with street food and themed bars in a maze of Mexican and Latino inspired delights meant that it was the hip place to dance and drink the night away. So it was no surprise when the Adelaide Festival brought Barrio back for 2013. This year’s program comes with some of Adelaide’s finest musical talent in Ross McHenry (The Transatlantics, Shaolin Afronauts) and Surahn (ex Swiss and Empire of The Sun) both gracing the stage for solo shows. Also appearing at Barrio are international and international party-starters such as Soul II Soul, Hugo Mendez, Tory Y Moi, Keb Darge and The Snowdroppers.

Aside from the music there is the food and drink. The 10-night fiesta will combine the “chaos of Hawkers market meets Mexican cantina” as street stalls such as the Neon Lobster returns with its Mexican street food while new additions such as The Vendor will mix Argentinian and Asian food. The cocktail bars are back, as the Dusty Boots Bourbon Bar and Gringo’s Tequila Bar will be present once again along with the Coppers Bar.

Each night will be themed. Some of the themes include the raunchy Bunga Bunga Party, Animal House and Road Kill, which is a celebration of Ozploitation films.

Friday, March 1 - Lunch Lady?: A night of food that comes straight from the hearts and backyards of South Australia’s communities. Music: Puta Madre Brothers (AUS) and Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL) (USA).

Saturday, March 2 - Bunga Bunga Party: A raunchy adults only party. Music: Soul II Soul Soundsystem (UK), HMC, Sanjit & Eric The Falcon.

Sunday, March 3 - Key to Barrio: ?The Mayor of Barrio presents the key to the shantytown to Adelaide’s Lord Mayor. Ceremonies are the theme with citizenship ceremonies, scattering of the ashes and a marriage. Music: Ross McHenry Future Ensemble, where local producer and instrumentalist Ross McHenry will be joined by Mark de Clive Lowe (USA) and other local talent. Also on the bill is Nickodemus (USA)

Thursday, March 7 - Phobia: A night of phobias. Music: Cory McAbee (AUS), Billy Bob’s Jam Team (AUS) and Kira Piru and The Bruise (AUS).

Friday, March 8 - Heaven’s Gate: A bit of cultish theme this one. Music: Toro Y Moi (USA)

Saturday, March 9 – Diceworld: An homage to the famous novel Diceman, as you leave your life to chance for one night. Music: Surahn (AUS) and Keb Darge (UK).

Sunday, March 10 – Old Maid: The old game Old Maid is the theme of this night: Music: Electric Empire (NZ/AUS) and DJ Hugo Mendez (BRA)

Thursday, March 14 – Animal House: This night promises to have more animal action than you can poke a stick at. Music: Cumbia Cosmonauts (AUS) and DJ Saca La Mois (AUS).

Friday, March 15 – Road Kill: A celebration of Ozploitation as Barrio honours classic Oz films such as Razorback and Wolf Creek. Music: DJ Pole (GER), Client Liason (AUS) and The Snowdroppers (AUS).

Saturday, March 16 - Slumber Party?: Bring your PJs for a slumber party to help raise fund for Mission Australia. Music: ?Gramatik (USA), Emma Donovan and The Putbacks.

This afternoon I enjoyed the Faulty Towers dining experience at the Old Adelaide Hotel in O'Connell Street, North Adelaide.

The cast were the same ones shown in this video.

Absolutely brilliant! There's still tickets left for a few more performances if anyone fancies it.

The prices are not cheap, but neither is the quality. Highly recommended!!!
