How about this idea..... Setting up an interactive chat facility which people
can only access at a certain time.

E.g. We could make the time 9pm on Friday nights. People can log on chat
to each other about developments in Adelaide.

Restricting the facility to Friday night would ensure that people would
still use the forums in the regular way.

If the chat facility was available 24/7 then people might not use the forums so
much.

It would allow users to get to know each other better and could lead to more social
activities / meetings during the year.

Someone want to run a SA irc channel? I'm totally okay with it, but my previous experience with irc chat is that it generally isn't all that popular.

I am suggesting that there should be a chat facility on this website....

Well if a chat facility was setup then people would know each
other better and there would be more social activities as a result

And i'm suggesting, that anyone here can set one up.. and we'll include a link to it. And the easiest way to do that is through Internet Relay Chat (IRC)... so whoever sets it up can moderate it.

I don't think a link to an irc channel would work that well... since
other people outside of this site would log in and possibly talk about
other things besides development in SA.

My proposal is to have a dedicated page on this site which has a chat
facility. The chat session would start on Friday 9.30 pm and finish at
midnight. Users could log on and chat about developments in Adelaide
which have occured during the week.

What's wrong with using the forum to do that?

Stickam perhaps? You can make private chat rooms on there. And you can also do voice/video/text.

Tinychat might be another simpler option.

I'd rather we have a like button for posts, as they do on Facebook.

I'll have a look into various chat systems over the next couple of weeks and will
report back on what I think is best. As I said previously I think the chat page
needs to be hosted on this site.

I have some really good ideas on what we could do with this. Possibly we could
even look at using web cams and setting up a video link every friday night. We
could call it Friday night live !

I've been looking at chat systems over the last few days and my proposal is to
use :
http://www.123flashchat.com/

Cost starts at $19.

It supports video conferences and has a nice GUI.

Can't go wrong with this one.
