Yes. You spotted it!
Check forum board index for record number of (concurrent) users online: 100 on April 17, 2012.

Just a coincidence or some hot topic for discussion?

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this but here goes.....I have a few suggestions regarding the forum categories and subjects. With the "tidy up" of CBD/Metropolitan/Region forums (well done by the way who ever did it, I'm sure it was hours of thankless work) I believe it is time to get rid of the General Development Forum, I believe all the subjects inside the forum can be safely absorbed by the CBD/Metropolitan forums. Also I would change the title of Region to State/Region to accomodate threads like Defence/Agriculture/Forestry/Mining etc. Also it is time the Mt Barker thread moves to Metropolitan.... Mt Barker has realistically been a suburb of Adelaide for the last 20 years (and Gawler)

Hi PeFe,

Thanks for your suggestions. I will leave it with Howie to make a call on what to do with the General Development Forum section. I haven't got around to tidying up that section just yet, but will do so shortly.

Probably should use a better spambot detection like:
https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api2/demo

At the same time likely should update the server php, phpbb, upgrade the mysql and such and try to make the thing remotely stable :p

They get through because spam "bots" are real people posting spam. Howie installed a human verification question in the registration form a long time ago. It asks random word math problems.

Not sure about the stability issue. Howie got the techs at the host to do a lot of db tuning and so on to improve performance. I guess it's just groaning under the weight of many visits, years of posts and loads of members?

I would say that sounds right.
The only errors I get these days now from time to time, is Resource Limit Exceeded.
We need more bandwidth Howie

Is there any program that "checks" peoples posts ie when you join a forum, your first post is "checked" before you are allowed to continue posting?

The newer google api will reduce that also.
It detects spam patterns like registering to many forums and slows the user down significantly by giving them more work to pass. The difficulty and length to pass increases the more google think they are a spammer. Such as the user having to determine if many multiple images have a bridge in them etc.
The current questions 1+1+the amount of fingers on both your hands could be easily defeated by a bot and also is extremely quick for a human that is paid to register to forums.
The anti spam measure in use is dated and could be upgraded. Phpbb 3.2 includes the feature, no extension required.

Maybe you are right that the site hasn't died in the last week. Fingers crossed it is fixed.

You can have that the first post requires moderator approval.
Or that first five posts or whatever can not include a link.
