St Kilda Tram Museum - Sunday 30th.

#1 Post by sam » Sat Nov 22, 2008 9:07 am

Continuing from Will's post I'm going to try make it to this one, I'm assuming there will be a few of us that make it along next weekend?

The Australian Electric Transport Museum (SA) Inc (operators of the Tramway Museum at St Kilda, SA) invites you to attend the 100th Anniversary of Tram No. 1’s Trial Run at the Museum on St Kilda Road, St Kilda, SA on Sunday 30th November 2008 at 1.30pm.

Image

Adelaide’s first electric tram, No. 1, ran its first trial run along North Terrace on 30 November 1908. Following successful trials, Adelaide’s electric tramway system opened on 9 March 1909. Tram No. 1 is now preserved at the Museum and will re-create its trial run at 2.30pm. Prior to the re-created run, Tram No. 1 will line up for photographs with the Museums other electric trams from 1908-1909 – trams 10, 14, 15 & 42. The photo line up will also include vintage cars and bikes of the same era.

Adelaide Model Rail Operators are setting up a model tram layout.

Gates open at 10.00am and trams will continue to run until evening.
I have highlighted the Adelaide Model Rail Operators part because I am a member of this group. We have an Adelaide based tramway layout under construction (nearly complete in fact) which we will be running on the day and we will be set up in one of the depot buildings (to be precise, the green one to the right of the main enterance). Our group will have a number of trams running including 2 Flexis, 2 H class, 1 F1 class, 1 G class, 1 C class (mind), 1 B class ballast motor (mine) and an A as well as other trams.

Here are a couple of photos on the layout.

I'll be there sometime that day, depending on when I'm working.

Because I am going to help run the AMRO tram layout (with a couple of my scratchbuilt trams), I'll be there all day so I'll probably be seeing a lot of you there. In addition to tram number 1 running, virtually the entire Adelaide fleet they have there will also be on show including the Grand Lady resturaunt tram 378. Until a year or so ago, this tram had been sitting under tarps at Glengowrie depot and has now been restored to running order. As an aside, today, November 22nd represents the 50th anniversary to the day of the closure of the Cheltenham line which represented the end of street tramway operation in Adelaide bar the Glenelg line which continued to hang by a thread for several more years afterwards before picking up again.

I'd like to see a (or the old) restaurant tram do shuttles up and down Jetty Road. Would make for good tourism methinks.

If any of you are thinking of coming down to have a look at the layout, hopefully these photos help you decide to have a look. Got these photos earlier today.

Update on the layout for you all. The finishing touches are being applied now and it is all systems go. Our Adelaide tram fleet has now been expanded to include members of the A, B, C, E1, F1, H and I/100 classes as well as a couple of others. We also have a little surprise running on the layout as well which you are not going to be expecting! I have been busy this week either painting or building trams with three of them sitting infront of me at the moment! In that 'pile' is my latest scratchbuild project B 38 which was originally a toast rack tram converted into a ballast motor by simply taking all of the body off and leaving a running underframe. Below is a photo of the original taken in 1929 during the rebuild of the Glenelg line from a railway. This is also the only photo I think exists of it. This has proven to be a harder project to build then I thought but will most certainly be running on Sunday.

Just out of my workshop, tram B 38. Despite appearances, this will be running around tomorrow.

Time to post my photos. In comparison to previous trips, I didn't exactly get that many but I was also tied up helping to run the layout for a while. Never the less, here are my efforts.

Hs 360 and 378 in the museum yard soon after opening.

A 1 and B 42 at Mangrove Loop while awaiting 'tram order working' in regards to what H 360 was doing. D 192 and F1 282 were still running up on the mainline and had caught up by the time the convoy was moving again.

One of the biggest line ups at St Kilda Terminus in many years, H 360, A 1, B 42, D 192 and F1 282 all in a neat line. The line up and the amount of people sort've put me in mind of the days when trams used to serve Victoria Park racecourse when everything was thrown in to shifting the crowds. Nearly every tram was packed with a good few standing passengers too.

Will,
Is the Restuarant tram 378 in full operational working order (or at least can it be) I think that it would make for a magnificent tourist drawcard running up and down Jetty Road.

378 Grand Lady is (now) in operational condition and infact yesterday was the first time since 2001 that is has had passengers in it (myself included). In service by the STA/TransAdelaide between 1986 and 2001, it was never a commercial success like tram resturaunts in Melbourne are with the main reason sighted being that it only ran on the one route. Between 2001 and 2007, it was stored under tarps at the back of Glengowrie depot.

Would it be possible to run some of those trams on the free 'terrace to terrace' loop as a tourist attraction? In Melbourne they have heritage trams running on the free city loop, and not only do they provide a useful service, they are an attraction in themselves. Could the same not happen here?
