Completely inappropriate and verging on the pathetic to compare Adelaide to Gary.
Gary was a one-horse town, entirely reliant on the steel mills. Adelaide is not entirely reliant on the submarines or Holden.
In fact the premise of this thread highlights something which I have talked about for years; the underlying pathological negativity of the people in this state.
All the gains we made with the new Adelaide Oval and SAHMRI building have been lost after just 2-3 months of having the highest unemployment in the country. This is despite our economy still growing, our population growth remaining unchanged, our credit rating remaining unchanged and house prices continuing to climb. However, from hearing people on the street, the vibe is that we have returned to the State Bank days.
People, including those in positions of power and influence are currently paralysed with fear, negativity and hopelessness.

People are too easily influenced by negative local media. Going by some of the 'hysteria', you'd think this is the first time any place on the planet has experienced an economic down turn!

Part of the problem is that we aren't insulated from events abroad. This is the price we pay for globalization.
Things happen that are beyond our control.
What we need is competent political leaders who can lead us through these challenges.
We do not have that from any political party in this state, and federal it's almost just as big of a mess.
We are talking about people who are career politicians. They are in it now for the money and the perks.
A short stint as a politician, and you can retire with a hefty tax payer funded pension and not have any financial worries. Not that most of them had any financial worries before becoming politicians.
SA Labor has done a decent job with building infrastructure, not to say there's nothing left to do or that they couldn't have done better or be doing better. But at least they've done things. The alternative from the Liberals would have been nothing happening but plenty of excuses blaming Labor.
The jobs crisis, as much as the Liberal leader(what is his name even, I don't remember because we barely hear anything from him..do they even have policies?) would like South Australians to believe is Labors fault, is actually not Labors fault. BHP slashing another 380 jobs has nothing to do with the state government. BHP is a privately run business.
Again, it comes back to globalization and external factors abroad that we can't control.
For example, is it the state governments fault that commodity prices have fallen dramatically? According to the Liberal party it probably is.
Now, if it's Labors fault...what exactly would the Liberals have done differently? And there in is the problem. It's easy to throw mud and point fingers, but a little more difficult to come up with a viable alternative to take to the people to convince them to vote for you.
Why are we, South Australian tax payers, paying for the Liberal opposition again exactly?
Because from where I'm sitting, they have done nothing to be deserving of the big salaries they are getting at our expense.
How about performance based salaries for politicians?
In the case of the Liberal party opposition in this state, most of them would be struggling to pay their bills if being a politician was their only source of income.
