Howie, I think that this one is just a Category 2 development, therefore you can only make a submission if you have a property that will be affected by this development.Howie wrote:If you'd like to make a public submission in favour of this development application.. please follow the link here :

That's a shame then, thanks for clearing that up Will.

I remember making the same mistake with 20-22 Currie Street. If you look back enough in that thread, you will probably find my post calling upon the fellow forum members to make a submission!Howie wrote:That's a shame then, thanks for clearing that up Will.

Bad news on this one I'm afraid.
The recommendation for the ACC DAP is for them to REFUSE this application, when they meet next Monday.

Thanks Will. Do you know the reason behind the decision?
[COM] Re: #Proposed: 235-237 Pirie Street - 9 level Apartments
Although with student accommodation, there is a certain leeway compared to conventional residential accommodation, this proposal took it too far. It is deemed that the space allocated for each apartment is too small, in particular the bedrooms, kitchens and living areas.AtD wrote:Thanks Will. Do you know the reason behind the decision?
[COM] Re: #Proposed: 235-237 Pirie Street - 9 level Apartments
Not the biggest loss. It actually does look quite small too, only about 7-8m wide at its frontage for its 29m height.
[COM] Re: #Proposed: 235-237 Pirie Street - 9 lvl Apartments
This has come as a bit of a surprise to me as I wasn't expecting a ACC development assessment panel meeting until February 18, however as there is a lot of building applications awaiting approval, there will be a meeting this coming Monday (February 4)
Regarding this development, the developers have reduced the number of student apartments to 48, whilst increasing the living space in each apartment. Furthermore the developers have lowered the ground floor to street level, giving the building a better street appearance whilst making it interact better with the street. As such, the proposal now satisfies planning regulations and it is expected to receive planning approval.

Now that is how the planning process is meant to work. Good to see some common sense displayed by both parties.

Seems this one will be commencing sooner then we thought. I have added to the 2008 construction list as it was not previously on there:
DA/871/2007/1
30/03/2008
Application Assessed on Merit
Demolish existing building and construct 9 level student accommodation building containing 56 units with ancillary facilities, a basement carpark and 1 ground level retail tenancy - Stage 1 - demolition of existing building

Anyone have a rendering of the western facade? The eastern is blank. You'll be able to see most of the top floors from Pirie and Frome Streets above the SA Farmers building (which is on the corner of those streets).

New render showing stepped back upper floors.
Apparently this building is going to be called Freedom Space Apartments. They really are running out of ideas for apartment names aren't they!

While it will be good to get some extra residential activity in that part of the city, this is a seriously bland design.
[COM] Re: #Approved: 235-237 Pirie Street - 9 lvl Apartments
I'd have to disagree with you there urban, I think it's quite good. I'm sure if given a choice, the developers would not have blank walls on the eastern and western faces.
Anyway, does anyone else get the feeling the image has been stretched horizontally? Look at the cars in the foreground.
