Looks better than what people are giving it credit for TBH. Also, how does this not fit into its surrounds? The vertical articulation is very much in keeping with 223 NT/Old johnny's car park for one.

For some reason I don't hate it. I don't know why, but there is something strangely ok about it. Not sure if its just because it ties in with the existing architecture and surrounds or not but I don't hate it. Still waiting to see how it pans out...

This development has been nothing but panned from day 1, and sometimes I’m with the panners, but then other times I’m like no...reserve judgement until it tops out.

Regarding the comparisons to other buildings along NT like the old Jonnies carpark building, yes this development is similar in style with its verticity (is that even a word?? ), but why should this building have to be similar to those of its surrounds?? Why couldn’t it have been something more striking (for its height) to contrast against its surrounds??

But then again...it’s yet another bog standard student housing cereal box....to expect a masterpiece or even half a masterpiece I guess is just wishful thinking on my part....

I can somewhat understand how other horrible developments were approved by SCAP, but this whole development raises a lot of questions about our development planning process in Adelaide. Not only are the design and materials completely unsympathetic of North Terrace but the unspoken of (outside of this forum and motorists) horrible traffic management that has also come with this smells of corruption somewhere along the process.

How distinctive is "student housing"? How difficult would it be to reconfigure into family housing or retirement village or anything else?

Student housing is basically single room hostel style accommodation, with common kitchen and bathroom areas. The main difference between a student dorm and a prison cell is freedom essentially.

So is a "student hostel" with common bathroom and kitchen roughly equivalent to the city apartment version of a four-bedroom house in the suburbs? If the bottom falls out of the student market, can these large student buildings be sold/leased as homes for families instead?

This building has a distinct lack of windows and natural light. I can’t imagine anyone would “choose” to live here other than students or perhaps people who have financial constraints but want to live in the cbd. Essentially high rise ghettos.

Honestly I don't hate it - at least the cladding looks decent and not ugly untreated concrete ala Bentham St or the Waymouth St student accom. It would have looked much better if the fins were continuous though, they look so tacked on.

Surely you're taking the piss mate.

Anyone who chooses to live in a a prison cell but with freedom, daresay aren't exactly the brightest light bulbs in the room. You have to be pretty f*ng dumb to make such a poor lifestyle choice that most certainly will affect one's health and wellbeing, physically and mentally.

These type of buildings should just never be allowed to go up in the first place.
