Looks like this isn't happening anytime soon. Also not sure if serious but apparently the planet is going to reopen.

I quite like the idea of (and think this contributes to the possibility of) a "T" shaped skyline with the majority of high rise following the few blocks around the lengths of North Terrace and King William St. It makes for an interesting skyline from different angles and also creates lots of urban backdrops in the two lower density pockets of the "T".

Is this in addition to the Lester and Enigma 8 that are also proposed? Judging from the two sets of renders it appears they dont clash at all. If so then the blank eastern wall would be blocked out to some extent by the hotel. This proposal is sound without being anything special - impressive height for that corner of the city though

I remember going there when it opened as "The Oaks", a long, long time ago ...

In the design there's no reference whatsoever to the existing heritage building. Just cookie-cutter big boxes plonked around it. The old hotel looks like a dwarfed inconvenience, much like the proposed designs for the GPO and Festival Centre precincts ignoring their location and neighbours. 19th Century architects were years ahead of many of the current crop, even without the technology we have. They saw the importance of iconic location, and designed accordingly. The Newmarket and Botanic hotels were built as pubs, but the design celebrated their privileged location. Same for the GPO. And before the old argument surfaces about developers wanting maximum floor space for their $, of course they do. No issue. But it's the architect's role to demonstrate that good design doesn't need to cost more, and has many other benefits. That's where they're letting us down with a lot of Adelaide's golden opportunity new developments. Vision, innovation and smart don't have to be expensive. It's our built environment - they owe it to us.

Agree with your sentiments.

This bulky, box-like structure, plonked just behind the beautiful Newmarket Hotel, does not sit very well with its heritage-listed neighbour and prominent location. This unsympathetic development crowds out and dominates the view of the hotel and this iconic gateway location.

Reminds me of the current situation with the development of a massive Queen Street office block dominating the view of the heritage-listed Customs House in the Brisbane CBD.

I feel the same about the scale and design, siting of proposals in the vicinity of the heritage-listed Railway Station (Casino development backing on to, crowding out, the northern side of the Railway Station). This design has been approved with conditions ....

According to the minutes of the DAC meeting, “the limited level of detailed design resolution at this planning application phase of the podium, and its materiality, means that several aspects of the design response important to the setting of the heritage place are yet to be resolved”

Honey of a City and Vee at least the Newmarket still stands out. In the Casino development the proposed building completely obliterates the old Railway Station building. Look at it this way. It's like matching a tie and shirt to the suit. The same goes with the Newmarket.

Hopefully the restoration of the Newmarket Hotel they allude to involves returning to the former white colour scheme. I saw the yellow trim for the first time last year when I visited Adelaide. Just bizarre.

I like the little multi-level sky bridge part that connects the two towers. And I hope this development promotes more hi-rise along West Terrace... creating a more impressive skyline when you're driving into the CBD (from the airport).

Agreed.

This and other developments all along North Terrace, but particularly the western side, will also really extend the North Terrace boulevard 'walk of interest'. I like the idea that there will be interesting things to see and reasonably dense development from the very beginning of North Terrace (where it meets West Terrace) right down to a hopefully properly rejuvenated (old) RAH site where North Terrace meets East Terrace.

Speaking of planes, I imagine this development will be fairly prominent to planes landing from the city side - along with all the other changes - adding nicely to the first impression of a quite densely developed square surrounded by greenery.
