This topped out today.
What? Assuming Wilkiebard's pic was taken on the 6th, they did four levels in 8 days?

Sorry, should have mentioned that it EBGs blown up from an earlier post on this page on March 15.

I make it 16 stories if you allow 2 stories behind street level scaffolding. note this picture is from 3 weeks ago.

I guess they could have a 'mezzanine' floor, are those counted as a separate level?

Depends who is counting but CTBUH I believe no (but a 15-17 level lego brick bunnings window dump like this isn't CTBUH's concern)

Upmarket for many students is buying the fancier brand of instant ramen for 80 cents a packet instead of the 40 cent ones, it's all relative

Actually, I'd guess that for most rooms the sqm rent will be higher than in the new next door building....

Correct.

NTRabbit I think you are misunderstanding the market for these buildings. They are not cheap to rent in. A single room can cost over $300/week.

These buildings are filled almost exclusively with international students from rich families. Many of these students probably have more disposable income than most local working people. It's certainly no cliche of student poverty. These students aren't eating instant noodles - be in 40 or 80 cents a packet. Many of them spend hundreds of dollars a week dining out at fancy Chinese restaurants.

These students choose to live in these buildings because of the convenience. While they might look a bit ugly on the outside, they are quite well fitted out and provide a range of services that are useful to students, particularly those who are unfamiliar with Adelaide. Renting a room in one of these places is simple - you don't have to deal with the vagaries of the rental market or the shenanigans landlords get up to. Securing a house on the private rental market is difficult enough for locals to deal with, let alone for newly arrived international students who often have to contend with language barriers, lack of knowledge of Adelaide, and lack of transport options.

The type of students who survive on instant noodles live in sharehouses in the suburbs, not fancy, marketed "student accomodation". And of course, these days, the vast majority of domestic undergraduate students live at home with their parents. Moving out is simply unaffordable for most.

For many students who do live in these student accommodation buildings, it is a stepping stone to moving into the regular rental market. The convenience of the student accommodation allows newly arrived international students to get settled in Adelaide and get their bearings before seeking out more affordable options.

I really don't like this building (personal opinion) but floplo's picture is a really nice indication of the sort of change you can see from many 'old' views around Adelaide that have changed noticeably in the last 5-10 years. Adelaide is one increasingly dense CBD. I note the building with the orange 'balconies' which ACC wanted reduced in height because the original proposal was too tall.

Thank god the council was removed from the approval process. That building would’ve looked great had it been taller. Oh well.

Signage has also been installed on the west face. To be known as 'y suites'.
