More news on stadium upgrades have been announced today:

Both South Australia’s home of netball at Mile End and Thebarton Ovalwill be upgraded from a $214m sporting slush fund.

https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/messenge ... cf43fad3e4

Steven Marshall announced funding of $12m for the upgrade of Mile End Priceline Stadium and $5m towards an $18 million facelift for Thebarton Oval. There will also be $5m towards the $19 million upgrade to the State Centre of Football.

Steven Marshall said the State Government aimed to “lead South Australia into a sporting golden era. Our investment is a game-changer for sport at all levels and will cement our state as one of the leading sporting cities in the nation.”

A sporting golden era that includes a half baked tennis project and a new stadium that doesn’t facilitate any field sports.

Sure Jan.

Great, so this means SA will continue to have an array of average stadiums for each sporting code scattered in inner suburbs, rather than one central one. It will also mean surely that any future centralised arena is now likely decades off. Wonderful outcome for the state

And the joke continues with these pie in the sky, unworkable concepts – and that is very reason there is no proper plan of action. There is no single focus and there are too many conflicting self-interest groups.

The most practical solution still might be a properly rebuilt Memorial Drive for hardcourt sports and medium size concerts AND a separate stadium within a short walking distance of AO & MD for rectangular grass sports.

At this rate of procrastination and a different idea every month, nothing will come to fruition in a timely manner.

And without additional Federal funding from hosting the Commonwealth Games because SA pulled out of the bid process, this is going to take even longer.
The best solution remains the proper full redevelopment of Memorial Drive into an indoor arena to host tennis/basketball/netball/and other small court things, a proper tennis and multi-use facility in other words, and a rectangular stadium nearby such as to the east of Adelaide Oval for soccer/rugby/whatever like concerts.

What the Liberals are doing is worse then band aid fixes, it's a complete waste of time and tax payers money.
It's just random thought bubbles over their coffee breaks.

Fellas one important point about a soccer stadium. If we want a FIFA sanctioned stadium capable of attracting any World Cup matches (men or women) the stadium has to be 40,000 seat and covered. Anything less will always be a backyard stadium. Both Liberal and Labour need to acknowledge this. Please don't comeback saying it is too big. It is not. Soccer in the A-league doesn't have to fill it, other events can and will. The location is central, build it at the University Oval opposite the Adelaide Oval. This was suggested by rev and is the best place of all. Parklands can be returned elsewhere such as the Police Barracks.

The indoor stadium for court events should be at Memorial Drive. It can be easily expanded to a decent size but both North and South stands must go. No more bullshit heritage excuses like what was done at Adelaide Oval with the Sir Donald Bradman Pavilion (Western Stand). That basically started the fuck-up we have now when we should've had a covered and tiered stadium right round if not a horseshoe of the same design with the moreton bays as the only open space (until they perish).

I've said this before but many here are deaf. There is room at Memorial Drive all they need to do is to dig down. The present roof can still be used but it must be sealed no air (gusts of wind) and light (sun) must come through any gaps. Or else demolish it in a few years when it has paid for it self and build a proper arena capable of seating anything around 8,000-10,000. Which is more than sufficient for indoor sports. The 40,000 FIFA sanctioned stadium would also be good for concerts if the stadium is built with a retractable roof. No need for a 30,000 seat stadium that cannot host soccer, rugby union and league.

No stadium or arena should be built over the railyards. Leave this area for other purposes. Medical, Educational, Cultural, Leisure and Hospitality. My :2cents:

Cheers

Marshall spending money on thebarton oval, hindmarsh stadium and memorial drive is rubbing salt into the wound of those who like the Adelaide 500.

It seems Marshall has money for everything else besides the Adelaide 500.

Well you could vote labour which has signed to return it in 2022 if voted in. It will be interesting to see The Bends attendance for next year with no Adelaide race. Regardless all the other sport infrastructure announced will be built which is good. Hopefully there will be a new stadium announced in the next budget from either party.

It doesn't have to be, and you would know this if you actually had any idea of what you were talking about. The fact that FFA would throw regional centres into any FIFA World Cup bid despite their stadiums not surpassing 30,000 in capacity proves this. AAMI Park in Melbourne is only 30,000 ffs. 40,000 for Adelaide is too big, and there are no other purposes in Adelaide that would support a rectangular stadium of that size. We don't have a NFL squad, we have only one A-League team and that is unlikely to change in the near future, so we would be relying on a few international games of football and rugby to sustain it and even then they wouldn't make out at 40,000. The University Oval is a shit location for it, if you want to repurpose the police barracks then build it there and at-least it can be on the tram line. The best location for it is the site of the Entertainment Centre, it's already government land, it's on a transport corridor and it's close enough to the city without being inconvenient and far enough out of the city to not have easy access from all directions of Adelaide.

If you want to talk about shit locations then everything in inner west is shit – why on earth do people still talk about the Entertainment Centre, Hindmarsh Stadium, Thebarton Oval, Richmond Oval etc as ‘sporting /event hubs’? Crap side of town, crap facilities and public transport routes that only suit people who can get there on one PT route – in other words the minority.

Central locations such as AO & MD fit the real requirements for these places, and a having a rectangular stadium for grass sports near the same location also fits the bill.

"Crap side of town" In what sense is the inner-west this?

I think you could argue the Entertainment Centre has as good or better public transport connections than Adelaide Oval -- it's physically closer to both the tramline and railway as well as key bus routes.

I am not sure if your comment is sarcasm or if you are serious? If serious, what are you smoking?

Besides, you want interstate and international tourists to be attending events in the best part of your city – not send them out to a wasteland.

You're entitled to your opinion but it's worth remembering that various forum members live in and love the western suburbs so sweeping statements about the whole inner west being "the crap side of town" and "a wasteland" are likely to be seen as quite offensive and I'd argue are unnecessary.
