The Southern Cross Arcade was only built in the 70s (1974 according to this: https://www.samemory.sa.gov.au/site/pag ... 443&c=1205), replacing a much older hotel that was on the site. Another good photo of the original hotel here: https://i1.wp.com/timegents.com/wp-cont ... =736&ssl=1
Isn't the 3 story part of the Southern Cross Arcade frontage the remains of the original Southern Cross Hotel?

Nope, the three storey section on the current arcade is in the centre of the facade, the original three storey section of the Hotel was on the far side of the arcade site, next to the Sands and McDougall building.

Here's a photo of the Southen Cross site post-hotel demolition

https://collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/resource/B+71876/95

As you can see, they did a good job building a "retro" facade to it, but the actual arcade had nothing at all to do with the old hotel building.

On Charter Halls site it mentions a supermarket, who do you think it'll be? Coles, Foodland and Woolworths are already in the Rundle Mall. Drakes, IGA or Aldi maybe?

Maybe Big W? They currently don't have a store in the CBD.

I think a Chapleys Foodland like the one at Pasadena or Frewville would work well in the city.

I think it will be either Aldi or Woolworths.

That is an absolutely massive building footprint. Will be quite chunky once done.

It's a smaller supermarket footprint from the plans, I'm going to say Woolworths. I feel as though Aldi will do their own thing if they ever decide to build in the CBD. Woolworths on the other hand would likely benefit from distancing themselves from Coles, their current site is probably setting them back a small fortune in rent whereas moving into this site might come with mutual incentives for building owners and Woolies alike in the immediate.

For what it’s worth, Charter Hall (the developer here) do own the Brickworks shopping centre anchored by Woolies... but they also own the massive new Metcash (IGA, Foodland etc) distribution centre at Gepps Cross.

Given the way the hoarding is going up, the temporary fence, the removal of signage, and the hotel actually being closed for the last week at least, any thoughts as to what's happening? There are also some pretty major holes in the back of the building on the ground level opening up on the delomition site at the moment too.

According to their Facebook page, the hotel was sold with little notice at the start of April.
