Don't fall for the politics. It was Labor that built the most expensive hospital in the world, and failed to provide enough funding to run it properly in the first place. The hospital system is a mess-in every state and has been for some time. Granted the Libs have made matters worse. By all means-lets discuss the merits of Memorial Drive V this new site, but this "wont someone think of the children" cry by politicians or their ideologues every time something big or expensive gets proposed for Adelaide really is a bit sad.rev wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 5:11 pmLabor have pledged to scrap this and redirect funding to health care.

Wouldn't be surprised if they do tge Memorial Drive upgrade instead. We can have better health care and a new arena without spending 3 quarters of a billion on an arena alone.

1.95b proposed for women's and children's Hospital for liberal in 2021.
These are not miles apart and nrah is a larger hospital.

Health care should always be prioritised ahead of over the top stadiums.claybro wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 5:38 pmDon't fall for the politics. This is an over the top proposal, when there are more important priorities (healthcare, ambos), and when there's another option at a third of the cost that would allow those hundreds of millions to be used on other actual priorities like healthcare.
Re: New City Arena
Fair call Rev. But let’s see if Memorial Drive can actually be made to the same standard, for a third of the cost, and how much extrafunding Labor will actually put into the coalface of the health system (not just more funding for bureaucrats). Remember the Labor option of Adelaide oval upgrade, only got 2 thirds of a stadium.. yes it is a success, but mainly due to its location, and rightly or wrongly is always seen interstate as unfinished due to the open northern mound. I like the idea of upgrading Memorial Drive, but that then leaves an empty end to the riverbank precinct, which will then remain un fulfilled, because according to Labor, the state can’t afford to develop it and fund the health service. They have now painted themselves into a corner. Be very interesting to see what they actually come up with.

My desired outcome also. However if Labor win in March and they do intend to rebuild Memorial Drive, the Libs have certainly bought them time to ponder in terms of replacing Memorial Drive considering the current upgrade of the Drive will only just be complete next year.rev wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 5:11 pmLabor have pledged to scrap this and redirect funding to health care.

Personally, the design and location of the proposed arena is what I hoped for the Convention Centre upgrade rather than the three piece jigsaw that Labor built in their last term.
Re: New City Arena
The Adelaide Venue Management Corporation are the ones getting a free ride here, they want an expanded Convention Centre where they will allow people to play basketball, netball and have an occasional concert.
I still prefer what I, and others, proposed previously with a long-term plan to upgrade Memorial Drive as a proper sports hub.
I think Labor has caught the Libs out on this one - even the revenue & operating cost statements announced by the Libs earlier in the week were a mix up as they rolled it into the whole venue mgt $$$ instead of separating the new arena’s $$$ - until it was pointed out and they had to backtrack.
Labor making it a new arena or better health services as an element in their election campaign is not such a bad tactic to get the public to really question what’s going behind the scenes with this proposal, which is now happening. Even better if they could put forward a better alternative at Memorial Drive for less $$$.
PS claybro - don't mention the unfinished Adelaide Oval Stadium in this forum- I did once and it caused an outcry.

Re: New City Arena
Strongly disagree. In the years of watching cricket and footy since the upgrade I've never heard any player/commentator/spectator describe the northern mound as anything other than a positive feature. If you can find any news article/interview etc with anyone noteworthy that supports closing in the northern end I'd be very interested to see a link to it.

Especially in the cricket world, the cathedral end is well known.Llessur2002 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 10:40 amStrongly disagree. Sorry guys but it is relevant when looking at total costing and how money is to be spent. - The AO cost a lot at the time for a 3 sided venue. Again I am not against a complete revamp of Memorial drive- and the Libs really don't help their own cause. Lets just hope Labor can actually come up with a decent venue out of Memorial drive for the money they are quoting-AND properly fund the coalface of medicine. I still believe though, the riverbank side needs some sort of major venue as a bookend to the other venues along there...the back of the Casino and Festival center area are really looking great.
Re: New City Arena
So you think the Labor MPs would scoff at a "basketball stadium" then immediately turn round and further upgrade a recently-upgraded tennis stadium? Even if the cost is an order of magnitude different, they would still cop some flack for that, surely!rev wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 5:11 pmLabor have pledged to scrap this and redirect funding to health care.

Re: New City Arena
Obviously it would depend on how its pitched and the long term reasons why that approach would be better than the City Arena proposal.SBD wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 2:20 pmSo you think the Labor MPs would scoff at a "basketball stadium" then immediately turn round and further upgrade a recently-upgraded tennis stadium? Re: New City Arena
It is EXACTLY what they did with the stadium. Libs proposed a covered football stadium on the railyards, Labor rubbished the proposal as too costly, then build a new hospital and upgraded Adelaide oval....so yes it is following a pattern-apparently a winning formula for them, but the devil will be in the detail.
Re: New City Arena
If Labor were to win, I'd expect a new redevelopment of Memorial Drive in the later half of their term.

How quick we are to forget, the same Labor that closed the repat and delayed the WCH rebuild. Sure they'll spend it on health.rev wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 5:11 pmLabor have pledged to scrap this and redirect funding to health care.

I don't like either major party but at least libs are spending on roads, hospitals including WCH and Repay not just a stadium. Also as a fisherman opening up our reservoirs for recreation creates a great tourism/employment opportunity.
