I spend quite a bit of time at Flinders Medical Center, so heres a quick update.

The cancer center area is about to be leveled and the foundation started. The new building housing the emergency area is progressing well with 80% of the fitout completed.
With the labour and delivery suites now moved, the old area is being stripped, and is now just a huge blank area, with work starting on the new theaters shortly.
Today when coming out there was a semi on the roof of the multi story car park with 2 huge generators on the back being unloaded by crane. ( The boom gate and overhead clearance signs were missing, so I'm assuming it came in via the emergency ramp.)
Anyone who tells you you cannot re-fit and old hospital to bring it up to modern standards, should be made to walk through Flinders on the hour, every day for a week. they must be commended for the way they handle the projects there, while keeping the disruptions to a minimum. :applause: :applause:

^^^
The difference between the RAH and Flinders is that Flinders has wide expanses of free land around it on which to build new buildings, transfer the services to the new building and then refurbish the existing area.

However, I agree that the professionalism of the builders has been excellent. Very little if any disruption or noise has been generated.

Can anyone tell me why the ground floor in a hospital is known as level 1 and not the ground floor ?

It can be safe to say that this one is now finally U/C

From the Woodside website:
Work Begins on the Woodhead designed Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer in Adelaide

South Australian Premier Mike Rann and Health Minister John Hill today donned hard hats and shovels to mark the start of construction of the $27 million Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, which will incorporate the LIVESTRONG Cancer Research Centre, designed by Woodhead.
When completed in late 2011, the Centre will house innovative clinical service facilities alongside more than 100 world-class cancer researchers focussed on the development of cancer prevention technologies and strategies in the Cancer Research Centre.

Premier Rann said “I have been in touch to cancer campaigner and LIVESTRONG founder Lance Armstrong who’s thrilled that construction is starting today on this magnificent centre and he’ s very keen to visit the Centre as it rises out of this ground.”

The Minister for Health commended the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation, the Flinders University and Flinders Medical Centre for their leadership and vision for this centre which will be South Australia’s first integrated cancer centre and the first in Australia to have a unique focus on cancer prevention research.

“As part of an ongoing commitment to making cancer research and care a priority in South Australia, the State Government has provided $7.5 million to the Centre, along with $5.2 million annually in operating costs,” Health Minister John Hill said.

Apart from over $3 million raised through the general public donation by the FMC Foundation, the Centre has attracted a $10 million grant from the Federal Government as well a range of major pledges from Flinders University; Cancer Council SA, the Australian Cancer Research Foundation; Flinders’ own clinicians through the FMC Clinician’s trust fund; and the Volunteer Service for FMC Inc.

In 2009 the vision of the Centre captured the imagination of seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong, who dedicated the name of his foundation LIVESTRONG to the new research wing and was present at a site-blessing ceremony earlier this year.

Chairman of the FMC Foundation, Mr Alan Young AM said it was a honour for the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation to join forces with LIVESTRONG in the global fight against cancer. “We are joining forces in the same way within the Centre, biomedical, behavioural and clinical researchers will join forces with oncologists, surgeons, nutritionists, psychologists, cancer nurses and allied health professionals, and patients and their families to create a comprehensive and person-focussed approach to clinical care and research.”

The budget must be tight if all those officials have to do the ground prep. ;)
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Construction to cause Flinders Medical Centre emergency department delays
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/sout ... 5941631703

DELAYS are expected at the Flinders Medical Centre emergency department over the next six to nine months while the hospital undergoes a major redevelopment.

Health Minister John Hill announced this morning construction of the next stage of a $163 million upgrade would start next week.

He said the works meant there would be less space in the hospital's emergency department.

"It's likely that there will be delays at Flinders ED (emergency department) while this work is happening, particularly at busy times," he said.

Mr Hill said there would still be emergency treatment 24 hours a day.

"But now more than ever we want to stress the importance of not going to hospital unless your condition is a medical emergency.

"Coughs, colds, tummy bugs, minor wounds, viral infections and some chronic long-term conditions are much better managed by going to see your GP."

The second stage of the project is expected to be finished by mid-2011.

The new emergency department will feature new assessment rooms and an extended emergency care unit.

The project will also include the demolition of the existing triage area, waiting room and administration areas.

I had a look at this a couple of weeks ago and it looks like its going ahead nicely.

I think they're working hard on it so that when Armstrong arrives in January they can
show him that good progress has been made.

Complete!

From the Woodhead website:
Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer opens in Adelaide

The Woodhead designed Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer was commissioned last month on the 26th April.

It is the first integrated cancer treatment and research facility in South Australia, and the first centre in the world to have a connection with Lance Armstrong and the Livestrong organisation.

The commissioning ceremony was opened with a traditional Aboriginal ritual of ‘welcome to country’.

Political leaders such as Tony Abbott were present along with ex South Australian Premier Mike Rann, Governor Kevin Scarce, Professor Graeme Young, the CEO and chairman of the Flinders Medial Centre Foundation Deborah Heithersay and Alan Young.

Lance Armstrong even made a virtual appearance to thank everyone involved including the Woodhead team.

There has been nothing but positive feedback from everyone that has been involved in the process of creating this centre: including suppliers, researchers and importantly patients.

Woodhead are proud and privileged to have been associated with the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer for the past 12 years

I love how all our universitys are getting these very architectually aware and well designed buildings.

Shame our CBD buildings arent doing the same.

After 5 years, all redevelopment of FMC is finally complete.

From the Advertiser:
Flinders Medical Centre opens $163 million redevelopment

From: AdelaideNow August 28, 2012 1:12PM

FLINDERS Medical Centre's $163 million redevelopment was officially opened this morning.

The hospital - originally built in 1976 - has had numerous upgrades over the past five years including an upgraded emergency department, expanded operating theatres and critical-care units, a new acute medical ward, and a new wing for maternity and gynaecology patients.
Premier Jay Weatherill, Health Minister John Hill and their opposition counterparts, leader Isobel Redmond and health spokesman Martin-Hamilton Smith all attended the opening.
Mr Weatherill said demand on public hospitals was "greater than ever" because of the state's growing and ageing population and the rise of chronic diseases.
"Flinders Medical Centre can now offer more services to more patients and has the facilities and technology to continue providing the highest standards of care and treatment," Mr Weatherill said.

The plans for the new $146 million 5 level rehabilitation building, new psychogeriatric building and the new 5 level staff carpark are before the state government DAC.

This proposal is designed to facilitate the transfer of services from the Repat.

The plans are available:
