Absolutely loved Henley when I was over there last month. They really have done a great job of the square, and it was buzzing on a warm Sunday afternoon-was a great spot for lunch, and unlike Perth we didn't get blown off the face of the earth while down there. Adelaide beachside locations are seriously undiscovered from a national point of view but are some of the best as far as vibrancy now. Loved that you could rent some time under a beach umbrella on the sand...as being a traveller, although I had shorts and a towel I obviously do not carry a beach umbrella on flights-and Henley was a spur of the moment thing. It was a great touch. Also spent some time at the Moseley club on the sand at Glenelg, a venue which I can confirm has also had some notoriety over here...in a positive way.

Looks great. A shame about the car park access - I wonder why Charles Sturt don't work with Foodland to move the entrance to Military Road. Seems like a wasted opportunity.

There is already an entrance on Military Road, though it's for the underground multi-level carpark.

Be better to see that entire corner block demolished and replaced with an extension of the shopping complex with a hotel or apartments above. There were plans years ago for something similar, but the council rejected it.

Actually looking at Google Streeview the gradient of a Military Road entrance would probably be too great. I didn't realise how far above the road level the carpark sits as you move North away from Main Street.

No, it isn't. Come to Aldgate or Bridgewater and look at how steep the ramps are to the supermarket car parks.

But, while you're looking at Streetview, look across the road to the northeast corner of the Main St / Military Road junction. This was the site of the Henley Beach Railway Station, which was the terminus before the line was truncated at Grange in 1957 (and further, to the new Grange station, in 1986). The rail line used to run along Military Road, on the eastern side between the front fences and the roadway, but by 1957 this was considered too dangerous.

Is it me not seeing it, or is there no lights/lighting in those renders of the new public plaza?

Not from an engineering/access perspective but a ramp would presumably mean a net loss to car parking spaces compared to the current at-grade side entrance. I presume Foodland wouldn't be happy with that.

Interesting about the train line.. what’s the chance it or light rail will ever come to Henley Beach? Would there be a wide enough route anyway?

Trams used to come to Henley Beach, along Henley Beach Road until the big S bend. From there they went on to a viaduct across the Reedbeds (Weetunga) swamp, basically along the alignment of what is now HMAS Australia Road, to reach Henley Beach. When the Breakout Creek was dug in 1939, the Reedbeds Swamp was mainly drained, and after a while the viaduct was no longer needed. I'm not sure if the trams were diverted to the new Henley Beach Road alignment or not. There is still a street in the vicinity called Viaduct Ave.

According to a tramways map from the late 1950s, it was.

Why would they put the lift to the basement right on the footpath? there's another lift inside so that one seems to only go to the carpark.
