Abbott has already agreed with the Japanese that they'll build our new subs, in Japan. He just hasn't come out and said it directly.
Only intense public and industry pressure that threatens to bring down the government, will change that. And if we are lucky enough, because the agreement was probably part of getting the FTA done with Japan.
But I wouldn't rule out the Germans swiping the deal away from the Japanese, as bribery and corruption is part of the how to do business mantra for firms like TKMS and Siemens.

An Australian design with involvement from our closest allies(the UK & USA) built in Australia is the best option. Not just for jobs and the economy, but for our national security which is what should be the primary focus. Of course politics get in the way and we end up with ridiculous situations where the Japanese are going to build our submarines without sharing any of the tech or critical information about them for us to operate them effectively and to their full potential. In such scenarios we may as well shut down the ADF and contract the defence of our nation to foreigners.

Not likely before the next Federal election, if Abbott's pick to build the subs in Japan gets up?
And who believes ... lots of jobs for SA?!?

From News.com.au
Bid to return car manufacturing to Tonsley gathers momentum: Local council votes to investigate viability

PLAN to bring car manufacturing back to Adelaide’s southwest is gaining traction.
Marion Council last week voted to investigate the viability of building electric cars in the region, with Tonsley firming as the most likely site.
Cars have not been built in the district since Mitsubishi closed its Tonsley factory in 2008.
Councillor Nick Westwood, who is behind the idea, said he would seek meetings with industry leaders, academics and politicians to discuss the concept.
“Some people will say that’s beyond (the) council’s interests (but) it will help to create employment,” Cr Westwood said.
Flinders University’s New Venture Institute at Tonsley, which connects the university to businesses and entrepreneurs, has expressed interest in the proposal.
The institute’s director, Matthew Salier, said Tonsley would be the “perfect location” to manufacture electric cars.

said Tonsley already had the relevant business and research leaders needed to ensure the venture was successful.
“We will need to galvanise those services in the most effective ways,” Mr Salier said.
“Having the strong research base is critical to (the electric car) industry succeeding.
“So the university has a really critical role to play in supporting that.
“Tonsley is a very important piece of transforming the economy.”
Flinders Centre for Nanoscale Science and Technology director David Lewis said SA had the potential to produce electric cars on a global scale.
“The first step is to do a study,” Professor Lewis said.
“It comes down to where the benefits lie.
“To be successful, you would need a good mixture of access to technical resources as well as companies.
“I do think Tonsley has that perfect mix to be able to pull it off.
“That’s not to say you can’t do it elsewhere.”
He said if building entire electric cars was not possible, the region could focus on making parts for the vehicles.
“We could make the engines or the batteries — that’s very, very achievable,” Professor Lewis said.
Manufacturing Minister Kyam Maher said the State Government was happy to work with people with a viable business case for manufacturing in the state.

From the ABC
Tonsley housing plan unveiled, but industrial chemicals no problem says SA Government

Image

There is no evidence of any industrial contamination that would prevent construction of about 850 houses and apartments in the Tonsley precinct of southern Adelaide, the South Australian Government says.

Housing will be put on part of the former Mitsubishi site at Clovelly Park, not far from where chemical contamination from the solvent TCE forced some public housing residents to move out.

CIC Australia, the developer of the northern Adelaide suburb of Lightsview, has been chosen to build medium- to high-density development on 11 hectares of Tonsley land, between Flinders campus facilities and the southern suburbs rail line.

State Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said housing would give the area a boost, a decade after Mitsubishi closed its manufacturing plant.

"Having this new development, which will support approximately 1,200 residents, will ensure this site is active 24 hours a day and seven days a week," he said.

"The State Government is partnering with the Federal Government to extend the Tonsley railway line to Flinders University [at nearby Bedford Park].

"It is very much looking forward to expanding the student presence on the site ... which will include affordable housing — housing that can accommodate students as well as people who want to live in what's a fantastic location in Adelaide's south."

The government agency Renewal SA has shifted residents from a nearby Clovelly Park street ahead of planned demolition of public housing which has been affected by TCE.

Great to see it close to P/T.

Hopefully they get the density right, could be a greater lift for train usage.

From The Advertiser
South grows up with major rezoning plans for land around Tonsley, Flinders University and Warriparinga wetlands

HIGH-DENSITY housing near the Warriparinga Wetlands, 15-storey buildings in Tonsley and new shops and restaurants feature in a bold State Government vision to rezone the area.
The government has released the proposed changes, to cater for population growth and capitalise on the South Rd upgrade at Darlington and new Flinders train link.
It would allow homes, including aged care for Aboriginal elders, overlooking the Marion Rd wetlands.
The plan also paves the way for:
■ More educational, office and research-based activities in Laffer’s Triangle, between Sturt, Marion and Main South roads. Buildings up to 10 storeys high would be allowed in the area;
■ Apartments and shops next to the Clovelly Park train station. Buildings up to 10 storeys would feature on Tonsley Blvd, and 15 storeys on Mab Circuit, also in the Tonsley innovation precinct;
■ A Tonsley rail line extension to the Flinders medical centre and private hospital, with shops and accommodation surrounding the final stop and
■ Extending Flinders Drive alongside the new rail line to Tonsley, with buildings up to six storeys allowed along the thoroughfare. There would also be a walking and cycling trail alongside the train line.
The plan, released last week, says the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) wants to develop its 5.8ha site next to the wetlands in Laffer’s Triangle with retirement accommodation for Aboriginal elders.

“Land adjacent to the Warriparinga Wetlands should predominantly cater for medium to high density residential uses, shops with outdoor dining areas, and tourist accommodation to maximise the outlook over this important regional open space,” it states.
In 2012, the Friends of Warriparinga unsuccessfully pushed to have much of the 35ha Laffer’s Triangle rezoned “conservation’’ to save it from further development.
Friends of Warriparinga chairman Bruce Wilson this week said the group was concerned housing near Warriparinga could create issues with stormwater run-off getting into the Sturt River and Oaklands Wetlands.
“We’ve been associated with this area for 26 years and every year we’ve had to bring the public’s attention to something about this place because it’s continuously threatened,” Mr Wilson said.
“It’s a sanctuary in the middle of suburbia.”
Marion Mayor Kris Hanna said he expected the most “striking feature” for locals would be the new height limits, although they were unlikely to see their full effect for years.

Adelaide's burgeoning biomedical precinct in the SW corner of the city is well documented in this forum and this is complemented by the growing reputation of the Tonsley innovation hub, including this latest news of a new high-tech pharma company setting up a factory at the hub.
A first-of-its-kind ‘fill-and-finish’ injectable medicines factory will set up shop in Adelaide’s Tonsley innovation hub, after securing crucial set-up funds in an investment round.

...biopharmaceutical company GEN1 hoped to create up to 200 new jobs and inject around $650 million into the state economy over a decade with the establishment of its new operation – which would formulate base compounds into medicines to fill syringes, vials and cartridges as ready-to-use injectables.

GEN1 Chief Financial Officer Kishen Vijayadass said the initial investment round “will support the company’s delivery of a factory in Adelaide that will benefit all Australians”.
“Adelaide has a vibrant, fast-growing life sciences community and the South Australian Government, through Health Industries SA, was very responsive to GEN1 and provided invaluable support."
The company says its planned 15,000 square metre factory will be the first of its kind and scale in Australia, which currently imports injectable medicines for chronic conditions such as cancer, hypertension and diabetes.

However, the national market for injectable medication exceeds $10 billion annually and is growing by 15-20 per cent a year, according to IMS Health.

Health Industries SA CEO Marco Baccanti said GEN1 will be a boon for the state’s health system, with “the potential to save SA up to $70m a year in medication spending”.

From The Advertiser
Former Mitsubishi site, Tonsley innovation district, wins 2017 Australian Urban Design Award 2017

A REVILTALISED car plant in Adelaide’s south has offered further proof of life after the decline of South Australia’s vehicle manufacturing industry, thanks to a major, national acknowledgment.

The Tonsley innovation district — on the former Mitsubishi site — was one of three big winners at the Australian Urban Design Awards 2017 on Wednesday night.

I can't recall what is happening with the Holden site at Elizabeth but if they mirrored the Tonsley concept there - that would be good.

Brewery, shops and apartments planned of old boilerhouse as part of Tonsley housing development
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/messenger ... 2f196ef3a8

APARTMENT buildings spanning four or five storeys, a supermarket, specialty shops and microbrewery will be among key features of a housing development planned for the old Tonsley Mitsubishi site on South Rd.

Land developer Peet Limited has told Marion elected members it will begin selling homes off the plans at the 11ha development site next month, after receiving planning approval for the project.

Company representatives presented their plans to councillors at an informal meeting on Tuesday, December 5, saying they also envisaged student accommodation and a microbrewery in the South Rd site’s 800sq m former boilerhouse.

Peet chief executive Brendan Gore said the company would open a sales centre on January 14, and civil construction would start late next month.

“Homes will be close to offices, retail, transport, education and recreational opportunities and careful attention has been paid to how the residential precinct integrates with the existing neighbourhood overall,” Mr Gore said.

Expressions of interest from potential microbrewery operators closed yesterday.

Cr Ian Crossland said plans showed properties in the 850-home development would carry industrial designs to fit in with the area’s local character. The developers had likened the project to the Lightsview development in Northgate.

“They have state planning approval and a clean bill of health from the EPA,” he said.

Cr Crossland said councillors had been told the first homes to be built would be townhouses. Apartments, including student accommodation, would be built later in blocks about four or five storeys high.

Plans on Renewal SA’s website show buildings in the precinct will be between two and seven storeys high, but Cr Raelene Telfer said councillors hoped they wouldn’t stretch higher than four.

She was concerned taller buildings would not fit in with neighbouring areas, create overshadowing problems and upset existing residents.

Cr Telfer said the plans included a swathe of open space between the new homes, allowing the council to build a nature play area for families.

“We’ll be able to build different installations onto it to build a linear playground, which will be very attractive,” she said.

The council and developers needed to work together to ensure there was adequate parking around the area’s open space, she said.

Apartments in the development will be priced from less than $200,000 to the “mid-$300,000s” for apartments and between “the mid-$300,000s to low $500,000s” for terrace homes.

The project is expected to house 1200 people and take about seven years to complete.

It follows a $253 million State Government investment commitment to redevelop the automotive manufacturing site formerly used by Chrysler and Mitsubishi.

The vision to transform the whole area will be complete in 2027.

What rock do these local councillors crawl out of? I would have thought the local residents were thrilled that a massive, smelly polluting manufacturing plant had been permanently closed, and in its place a mixed use modern development. We can only guess at the improvements to their property values will be in future. Whether or not a residential building on such a site is now 4 or 7 storeys? Who the hell cares.

Are they oblivious to the eight storey Flinders University building that already exists on site?
