#COM: Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
As some of you may have heard, the Woolworths and Big W in Cumberland Park will be closing in June/July for a full demolition and rebuild, to the new style of Woolworths buildings, and it's about time I say.
The Woolworths will be getting a large increase in area, while getting set back towards the back of the car park, against Eaton St, while the Big W will retain near the same size.
As an employee, I have access to some renders that are currently up in our lunchroom, which I will aim to get a copy of as soon as possible.

Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
underground or multi-level car parking perhaps?
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
would be great if it had a better connection with the AMF bowling across the road, a few specialty shops would be nice, but knowing woolies that will include: Michel's Patisserie, Bakers Delight and a Subway/KFC because we all should know by now, a local fruit/veg, butcher, and gourmet food store are already in woolies and thus irrelevant. and for carparking, in peak hour, goodwood road will be used as one
Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
It has been delayed, subject to council approval re: car parking spaces. Parking was originally considered underground, but proved to be too costly. Completion was originally forecast for early 2012 to coincide with the opening of Big W at the Brickworks.
Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
Anyone got any updates on this project?
I would love to see this site redeveloped into something better as it is currently a very tired and neglected centre.
Has a great location & the BigW there is bigger than normal & also has a decentish garden centre - something other Big W's don't have (eg Marion, & other stores located in malls).

Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
initial application was rejected at DAP on the grounds of car parking numbers. Subsequant application including basement parking under the southern part of the site is currently with council.
Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
Thanks for the update. I'm looking forward to this one.
Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
This project was approved at the Mitcham DAP last night. I anticipate Woolies will want to be open by next Christmas, but no official timing has been announced
Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
Great news!
This centre is long overdue for a redevelopment.

Re: #APP? Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
Personally, I would have liked to have seen the centre moved towards Goodwood Road, to create a more active street front.
Does anyone know what the approved plans consist of?

Re: APP: Cumberland Park Shopping Centre Redevelopment
The development proposal was approved on December 15, 2011. Woolworths will totally close within a couple months (around Easter) so the demolition and reconstruction of Woolworths can commence very soon after. The refurbishment of Big W will start in the latter part of 2012 (a bit before Christmas), so that both Woolworths and Big W will be completed together as a whole. Big W will still be trading during the refurbishment.
The redevelopment will include:
- Modern design and form, comprising of painted precast concrete panel walls and shopfront glazing.
- Overall parking spaces will increase from 460 to 554.
- Both stores will have improvements to the loading docks (with centralised access and layout).
- Installation of a 3.5m high acoustic wall and sliding gates along the Eaton Street frontage.
Woolworths:
- Demolition of the existing Woolworths building.
- Construction of a new supermarket building with a total floor area of 4030m² (increase of 1826m²).
- Building setback of 4.1 metres to Eaton Street and 3.46 metres to Little Street.
- Basement car park under the Woolworths part of the building for 181 car spaces.
- Storm water will be directed to detention tanks at the rear of the Woolworths building with a capacity of 130,000 litres.
Big W:
- Increase of total floor area by 260m².
- Demolition of existing mechanic workshop and toilet facilities.
- New contemporary facades including feature skillion roof entrances and alucobond awnings facing Goodwood Road.
