Go west: Kaufland set to build West Lakes supermarket

German supermarket giant Kaufland has revealed plans for a third outlet in Adelaide’s west – weeks after they scrapped plans for Munno Para.

German supermarket giant Kaufland is set to open a store in the west as part of a major redevelopment of Football Park.

Development firm Commercial & General on Monday confirmed Kaufland would be part of the $120 million residential development at West Lakes, named WEST.

The 4000sq m supermarket will be built at the corner of West Lakes Boulevard and Turner Drive and form part of a community and shopping area to be known as Charles St.

A development application for the supermarket was lodged last week.

Commercial & General executive director of communities Chris Menz welcomed the news Kaufland would be part of his firm’s development.

He said it was one of “Europe’s largest brands and prides itself on being a one-stop destination for everyday needs” and believed it would be “a real bonus” for the development.

A new $11 million Charles Sturt Council library will also be built nearby, including a community space and kitchen.

A landscaped plaza and cafe will connect the library building to the Football Park oval.

Business and commercial tenancies will be built above, including for medical and health purposes.

The five-storey complex will have 108 private rooms, 17 retirement living apartments overlooking the oval and an 18-bed specialist unit for patients suffering from dementia.

The Kaufland announcement came after the German supermarket chain earlier this month shelved plans to build a $24 million store at Munno Para.

No reasons were disclosed for the change but traffic management issues are understood to have played a role, with Curtis Rd becoming one of the most congested roads in the north.

The change left a $8.2 million hole in Playford Council’s budget.

Kaufland has already announced supermarkets at Prospect and Forrestville.

I'm all for a new library but I am hoping it has a decent Local History section like the Port Adelaide library and almost every other metro library I have visited. Charles Sturt Council has very limited local history information on their website also so a good local history room / study area would be very welcomed I think especially with the "oldies" being next door.

Also, what does this mean will happen to the old library buildings closer to the lake?

At the risk of derailing the thread, just wanted to throw out there that I'll always consider this development a missed opportunity to build a branch railway to West Lakes off the Outer Harbor line when land acquisition alongside the boulevard would have been relatively easier. Could have pushed the density higher at West Lakes and closed the Grange branch at the same time as the Outer Harbour line finally would have had a more useful branch catchment. Grange (alongside Henley) could potentially be served instead by a tram line from Hindmarsh down Grange Road.

That would be to reinstate and extend the former Hendon railway line, which used to terminate at Hendon Station where West Lakes Boulevard crosses Tapleys Hill Road (West Lakes Bolevard uses the old railway easement). The rest of West Lakes Boulevard looks wide enough to just use one carriageway for rail, and put the road traffic next to it as the road no longer has to cope with game day at the footy, and the cars are supposed to be replaced by train passengers.

When this development first opened for sale, one of the sales representatives said that they were hoping to get a tram down west lakes boulevard. I believe there was even a space in the development put aside so the tram could come through it. I’m not sure if this is still the case though.

West Lakes Boulevard was built in the 70's with the intention of a train line going down the middle.....yes a heavy rail line (extension of the Hendon branch)

However the property developer objected at the time saying "that sort of development would bring the wrong sort of people to West Lakes"

So yes there is plenty of room for a tram line.

Elitist much! “We don’t want the kind of people who use trains to come to our development.” No wonder Adelaide is car-centric.

There’s an application for the former Radio Rentals to be converted into a kids play centre with bumper cars/boats plus a cafe.
On another note, just wondering as C&G built/own the Bunnings at Edwardstown if there is any chance they may build a Bunnings as part of their development here.

I'd be surprised if a Bunnings were built at West Lakes given there is a Bunnings about 5 mins away on Cheltenham Parade/Port Road

A tram down the boulevard will probably depend on the state government of the day.
Labour seemed to be pro-tram, Liberal not so.

Neither of the are going to waste money without some expectation of an economic benefit. The real difference is that Liberal governs (and seeks to improve infrastructure) for the whole state, Labor thinks most of the swinging voters are metropolitan, so the rest of the state doesn't matter.

Liberal's key rail project is the east-of-the-hills bypass as part of GlobeLink. Unofrtunately, it will cost lots and is not worth anything unless/until it is finished. If a tram didn't stack up when there was a big footy ground at the end, I doubt it will now either.

I have always thought that there is a big opportunity to build a park and ride at West Lakes, similar to the TTP park and ride.

Yes I agree esp if they ever branched the train line from Albert Pk as its only some 2-3 kms and the corridor is there to do it. It would be cheaper to build & quicker to the city than light rail however I concede aesthetically its not the best.

Wonder what goes here now.
