Yes to James / South Road - that whole road is one of the most pointless road plans in this state. It’s quicker to north to Bradman, up Bradman and then turn on to the Mile End road than take that road perviously mentioned.

And your second point... haha it’s not likely to happen for decades. No money in the infrastructure money cash spend announced by Marshal for that road. The Libs don’t want to touch big projects, they are looking at cheap and cheerful and not at the big one!

I thought it was that Liberal thought a big tunnel boring machine looks like fun, and they are waiting to find out how expensive it will be, instead of getting on with the Labor plan to do some short cut-and-cover tunnels, then an elevated road like the Superway. Unfortunately, Labor dropped the ball before the election by allowing the opportunity to review the plan, instead of having gone out to tender when their own plan said they should.

Both sides of politics seem to be in the way of just getting on with it, for different reasons.

On major roads like Unley Road, many cars park in the left lane, while others block the right lane while waiting to make right turns at every little cross street, making it very hard for through traffic to proceed along the road. You raise another major traffic issue in Adelaide: the sanctity of car parks.

What other city Adelaide's size would allow cars to be parked in traffic lanes along major roads? Unley Road is terrible for this, but it is a widespread problem across Adelaide.

Despite the fact that it often significantly worsens traffic congestion, no-one is prepared to tackle the issue of parking on major roads, because of completely irrational and disproportionate trader backlash. Businesses believe, very vocally, that if people are not allowed to park right outside their door, then their business will collapse. This is, of course, completely absurd. Nobody goes to a major shopping strip with the expectation that they will be able to park outside the exact shop that they want to visit. Those parks are normally full anyway. It would really not be much of an imposition on businesses and their customers to request customers to park in nearby sidestreets. If anything, clearways along major roads could improve business there, because by removing parked cars from next to the shopfronts, the businesses's visibility from the road would be substantially enhanced.

The council could also help by buying land for off road car parks and/or have more land management agreements to amalgamate carparks behind shops. For example to allow easier entry/exit points from the side streets. KW Rd Hyde Park has a few examples of these (like behind Cibo etc).

Even if contracts had been awarded, the new Liberal government could have cancelled them. It would have cost the state in penalties.

I think it's obvious that both sides of government have basically shelved the remaining section due to cost. it's all talk nothing else, labor had a plan but never went through with it and the libs are sticking with their 'we're exploring the option of a full blown tunnel' in the meantime the section between tonsley and the river torrens will grind to a standstill not just at peak times but even on Sunday arvos.

Major thoroughfare clearways, similar to the question of extended Sunday trading hours, are an issue that has been worked through in cities all over the world, including our own Sydney and Melbourne, yet perpetually remain in the “too hard” basket in Adelaide.

There are no traffic lights at this intersection, as Anzac Highway and sir Donald Bradman Drive do not meet each other.

Hopefully when the N-S motorway is completed the government of the day will invest a few bucks into a good old fashioned public information campaign on how to use the bloody thing...
