I think the last section of this project would easily annihilate the record for the most consultations conducted without actually coming up with a plan.

that's it, every year they extend the consultation process by another 12 months.

I like Darlington. The problem I thought of was the stormwater pipes that they didn’t know were there and started to leak which collapsed the shotcrete on the walls. Let’s hope we don’t have any big “whoops” problems like that.

I found a few images of one of the earlier Darlington proposals. The early design had the trench just on the west side and few less lanes. The upcoming Torrens to Darlington section should have minimal entry and exit points, I'd go with entry/exit points at Anzac Highway and maybe Cross Road.

They'll need one to give trucks coming from the new freight terminal at Adelaide Airport on Richmond Rd an almost straight shot onto the motorway, and I don't think one at ANZAC will do the job.

Also no genuine exit/entry between FMC and Cross or ANZAC just repeats the mistake of no genuine exit/entry between Darlington and Lonsdale, they'll need one at Daws Rd.

my guess is anzac highway, cross rd, SDB drive and possibly Richmond rd. that's max I'd say. Henley beach rd and daws rd no.

Entrances/exits should cater for freight movements only. This is where Darlington failed a bit.

The original delivery strategy provided for:
[*]Regency Road
[*]Port Road/Grange Road
[*] Sir Donald Bradman Drive and James Congdon Drive (using JCD for access to the city)
[*] split diamond interchange between Anzac Highway and Cross Road (or one at each)
[*] Tonsley Park/Ayliffes Rd/Shepherds Hill Road
[*] Southern Expressway/Flinders Drive (access to education and medical)

I think the remaining bit was to be four sections as doing it all at once would be too hard. It didn't allow for the railway extension, either. It put a park-and-ride at Sturt Interchange (renamed from Tonsley station) and one at Morphettville.

Why? Getting freight off of South Rd and Salisbury Hwy isn't the only reason for the motorway, South Rd is gridlocked just by cars and buses nearly all day, getting the longer distance daily traffic off the B road and onto the motorway is at least as important. Making entrances and exits for freight alone leaves us with gridlocked traffic driving next to a motorway that is largely empty.

Chilly didn't say the motorway should not be used by cars. He/she said that positioning the entrances and exits should be guided by freight needs.

If someone is driving from Regency Park to Castle Plaza and has to go through five sets of traffic lights at the end they've still avoided twenty-something sets. The more entrances and exits on a freeway, the less efficiently the traffic that is on the freeway flows. If they are driving from Noarlunga or Gawler to the CBD or the airport, then none of the intermediate exits matter.

I would add on to that the NSM should also primarily cater to traffic bypassing Adelaide suburbs and CBD entirely. The two most important interchanges for freight and through traffic are for the SEF at Cross Road (likely time be split with Anzac Hwy) and for the Airport at Sir Don Bradman Dr (likely to be split with James Congdon Dr); those interchanges and the entry/exit on T2T at Port Rd cater for CBD traffic by design anyway.

No other interchanges are necessary. Any traffic wanting to access secondary roads like Daws Rd and Richmond Rd (which can be accessed via Anzac Hwy anyway) or side streets can use the surface level South Rd.

Which still leaves us with clogged arterial roads and a very expensive half empty motorway. The more cars making longer trips we move onto the motorway, the easier life gets for people doing local A to B and our bus network.
