Flinders Uni has announced a pop-up plaza will be erected by the end around the new station.

Flinders has now commenced work on a pop-up community plaza, connecting the future Flinders Railway Station with our university community. This will be a safe and active space for passengers commuting via the train to various Flinders locations, with food trucks, shady plants and seating for students, staff and community to relax and enjoy throughout the day. Work on the plaza is expected to be complete later this year.

Brilliant.

They really should make a bus stop at the station, a one way road (loop) could easily be built. Enter Flinders Drive, left onto the service road, left at the weird roundabout, left after the station and left back onto Main South Road. If the grade is too steep you could make a turn around area next to the station like at the Uni terminus. There's plenty of room for buses at the station, there's a big carpark north of the station. The station is in a weird spot, and I see the gov't doing the most half arsed way to link into the hospital, the Uni has plans to link it in and buses are the best way to get people up the big hill. The new 330 and X331 can stop off at the station drop off most of the passengers than terminate at the hospital.

Good idea-as it stands now passengers will be dropped of at the Flinders Medical Centre Interchange and walk for several hundred meters to the new Station-but they will have to wait for the train ,which will operate every 30 minutes-could be long wait!

How do you know it will run every 30 minutes?

Other people on this forum have indicated the daytime frequency will be 20 minutes (I would prefer 15 minutes of course)

30 minutes will definitely be the night time/weekend frequency.

I'm guessing that Flinders Uni wanted to maximise the land around the station for their own economic benefit [building new buildings, shops, accoomodation etc] rather than as a bus station with no income/return etc

IMO they should knock down the carparks next to the station, relocate the bus interchange there and build new carparks on the site of the old interchange. I think it's important that the station/interchange be colocated and as close as possible to the medical centre.

I agree that would be the best outcome but I can think of no bus interchanges on private land. Maybe if the Govt bought/compulsorily acquired the land it could happen. Further the car parks generate an income for the Uni. and unfortunately a bus station/interchange doesn't.

Does the university own that land? I thought it was all owned by the government in the first place.

Why cant the bus interchange be built where the car parks are now and then re-build the car parks on top of the interchange?

Smart land use in Adelaide is not a prominent feature of the city.....

How frequent is the Flinders line going to run? I would think every 15min in peak if they want Uni students / medical workers to use it and the people from the 12 x G2X buses an hour. The single section of track is only 2.5km, it starts just north of Mitchell Park Station. Looking at old timetables (the current timetable shows Clovelly Park's time as the time the train would have arrived at the old Tonsley Station) it's 3 min from Mitchell Park to Tonsley add 1 min to get to Flinders Station, so it will take 4 or 5 min to get from the double track section to Flinders Station, to meet the next train in the double track section (on the Tonsley / Flinders line) the driver will have 5 or 6 min to change ends. I really don't think the gov't is going to spend $141 million on this extension to offer the same level of service the line currently gets in peak. Don't forget the Flinders line will have peak load in both directions taking commuters to the city and the flinders precinct. Flinders Uni alone has 30,000 students and staff. The line should operate every 15 mins 7am to 9am and 3pm to 7pm, 20 mins 9am to 3pm and 30 mins at other times, students will be coming and going all throughout the day, so a 20 min frequency would be good in interpeak.

The university owns the land around the station, but the multilevel car park is controlled by the hospital. Building the new Flinders Village took Governmental approval, so the opportunity to move the bus interchange was there for the Govt to take. Maybe it's not a bad thing though - the main entrance of the hospital will be a 5-10 minute walk away, depending on your mobility.

The Advertiser has been doing a series this week on Universities. Saturday will be about infrastructure, so we might learn more then.

Jeez the wheels of government turn slowly......very slowly.....the Flinders train line has been in planning for years. Talked about for years (first proposed in 1969) then given the green light at least 3, 4 years ago(?) and now the powers that be start investigating the best place for a bus interchange......

Terminating some southern suburbs buses at Flinders was always going to happen, Labor or Liberal government, it was always the most logical and economic thing to do.

Governments that are unable to integrate the two developments at the same time....wow that says a lot about their planning capabilities....

Is the 1969 date true? Were they really planning to extend an industrial railway that had passenger trains at shift change and car parts in, cars out on trains, only three years after the branch line was built to serve the new Chrysler factory? Noting that the factory and the university opened at about the same time, it seems odd to have proposed to extend the line, but not to have built the whole thing in one build.
