I imagine that if serious civilian use of the Edinburgh runway was to occur in future, it would put all the civilian infrastructure on the western side. Heaslip Road would be closed to extend the runway to as long as Adelaide's, and the civilian infrastructure would go in the land presently bounded by the Northern Expressway, railway line and Heaslip Road.

None of those bases have the critical security infrastructure that Edinburgh has though. Darwin is a forward deployed base.
More importantly why the fuck would they add a civilian terminal at the raaf base? Why when there is a perfectly good one close by...

At the time Jetstar was entertaining the thought of using Edinburgh, it was at the time they were aiming to minimise the use of main airports (similar to how LCC's in Europe use outpost airports to save on costs). All of their Melbourne flights were flying out of Avalon at the time, and they were hoping to utilise other outpost airports.
Tiger coming in and going straight to Tullamarine for their flights forced Jetstar to start shifting flights there too, and the idea of using outpost airport (with the exception of Avalon) has barely been mentioned since.

First of all. When people talk about moving the airport to Edinburgh, really the only thing they'd be sharing with Defence is the runway. You build completely separate freight and passenger terminals away from defence operations. With that in mind there's nothing stopping Defence and civilian operations sharing a runway. The inly squabble will be about who retains priority for takeoffs and landings.
Second of all, it's still a dumb idea. Adelaide airport is not running out of capacity any time soon. Even if they get close, there are plenty of other lower cost options at AA to increase capacity without building a whole new airport.
At the end of the day, much of the benefits and competitivity of AA is in its location. For both passengers and freight. Remove that advantage and you are much less competitive than the eastern states options.

Forgive my ignorance, I'm a bit of a newbie and don't even live in Adelaide (yet), but on the maps it looks like land was (or still is?) set aside for a parallel runway at ADL, to the North East of the current runway? The alignment of the Kooyonga golf course and open space around West Beach looks like the kind of spot a second runway would go, and the terminal buildings would then be in between the two which makes for more efficient aircraft movements.
I think even if a second Adelaide airport ever took off (pun intended), ADL would likely remain in use for some domestic flights where business travellers prefer the proximity to the CBD, similar to how London City Airport operates very close to Docklands and central London.

They'd have to relocate the hangars and buildings for associated airport services. And it would involve a lot of other work to relocate things and make it possible.
I doubt the airport is that busy yet for a second runway for the main commercial airlines, although if it ever did become an issue I think it's more probable that the smaller second runway would be extended.

Both maritime surveillance squadrons are based at Edinburgh.
Then the Maritime Patrol support organisation is based at Edinburgh.
Plus tactical electronic warfare is based at Edinburgh and that would be the reason they would NEVER have commercial operations out of Edinburgh.
Case closed, let's build a bridge and get over it.

Adelaide Airport is in a great location, but it's not open 24/7 and people complain about the noise. One of the reasons for Globelink was to operate 24/7. Other airports around the world have curfews too, so to fly to/from those airports during their opening hours, it is advantageous for an airport here to operate 24/7.
That's why I think Adelaide Airport should have the passenger traffic, but anything else should go to another airport.
