International performers Bypassing adelaide

#1 Post by GreenMan » Mon Sep 12, 2022 11:06 pm

It’s an absolute disgrace that the state government has let the economy degrade to a point where all of the international musicians are now bypassing Adelaide.

Here’s are just a few names that are going to bypass SA.

Elton John
Jack Johnson
Billie Eilish
Belinda Carlisle
Justin Bieber
Harry styles
Kendrick Lamar
Post Malone
Red hot chilli peppers
Alanis Morissette

Billie Eilish is performing at two shows in Perth, but then not coming to Adelaide.

As a city we need to learn to be more progressive and to encourage growth so that this situation doesn’t happen. Our politicians are a joke.

Come to SA and bring your own lunch box because the shops aren’t open most of the time !

OK, I'll bite: What do you think is the reason these performers have decided to not come to Adelaide? I doubt they are doing macroeconomic analysis at the city or state level to decided that they will only visit cities above some threshold.

So is it about the size/quality of venues? Availability of venues that aren't already booked for something else on the day they'd want? Reputation that Adelaide people don't buy tickets until the last minute, so the performer/agency has outgoing cashflow before they can cover it? Reluctance of SA people to pay "international" ticket prices?

Kiss played at the Entertainment Centre last month, ticket prices ranged from $100 to $332. I think it was their fourth performance at that venue, as well as having played at Adelaide Oval, Memorial Drive and Clipsal 500.

If something happens in Perth, people go because there's nothing else to do. Despite your list, does Adelaide have more alternatives?

I find it ironic were a UNESCO city of music but nobody comes here.

Isn't Elton just completing the outstanding shows of his goodbye tour which was disrupted by COVID? He played his two Adelaide shows in December 2019.

See, we don't even need Alanis Morissette here now.

Is there are reason for the sudden bedwetting? It has been ever thus. We've always missed out on many bands. Perhaps the real change is that Perth seems to finally be having more luck, when for a long time they were at our odds or worse.

We do have one exception to the rule — Jack White is only doing Adelaide, for Harvest Rock.

The Gorillaz played here to a packed Ent. Centre a couple months ago, as a side show for Illuminate Adelaide. I can assure you the ticket prices weren't cheap and Adelaide still turned out in force.

Post Malone played the Ent. Centre a couple years back. I'd be interested to know how full it was for that one, i'd be guessing not very if he's giving it a miss this time around.

Luke Combs sold out in less than a day, there is demand for international acts here, I don't understand why more don't come.

We have a metropolitan population that is 2/3 that of Perth, 1/2 that of Brisbane, and a much smaller fraction that of Melbourne and Sydney. We're far enough away from the next nearest cities that doing a show here requires flying equipment and crew in and out, or day long road trips.

We are also close enough to Melbourne that many people will happily travel to Melbourne to see a show from a big act that doesn't visit here. Perth doesn't have that same convenience.

Admittedly, there are some performances where I would rather go to Melbourne for, simply for an all rounded experience. E.g. Coldplay
