Airport Control Tower, SA
The Air Services Australia New Traffic Control Tower is being built by Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd.
The new tower will be located immediately East of the runways adjacent to the old domestic terminal building site, which was demolished last year.
The new tower will be just under 50.000 meters above ground level and will incorporate a two storey concrete framed administration and services infrastructure building.
The tower will have a concrete framed tower which is proposed to be slip formed, the upper operation deck levels will be incorporated with a reinforced precast funnel structure with in-situ slabs and internallift & stair core. The upper levels will be accessed via a single lift and fire stair.
The on site construction activities are scheduled to commence late June 2010 with the Towers completion forecast for August 2011.

Would this be the 2nd tallest structure in the suburbs?, first being Torrens Island Power Station.

I'm not trying to sound like an Adelaide City resident NIMBY but isn't 50m a tad too tall for an airport? It's just a question not a statement.

Are you questioning whether such a tall structure will present as an flight path risk? if so, the answer is no because airplanes are typically on the ground at airports, so the building height does not overly matter.iTouch(myself) wrote:I'm not trying to sound like an Adelaide City resident NIMBY but isn't 50m a tad too tall for an airport? Control towers typically need to be substantially taller than other structures at the airport so that traffic control can see what is happening on the ground around all parts of the airport unobstructed. The one at Heathrow in London is 87m tall for this very purpose so it can see around all 5 airport terminals.iTouch(myself) wrote:I'm not trying to sound like an Adelaide City resident NIMBY but isn't 50m a tad too tall for an airport? Further to that, Melbourne Airport is also getting a new ATC tower around the same time. Because of the reasons AG has mentioned above, theirs will be taller at 78m. The image below is of the soon to be constructed Melbourne tower, ours will more than likely just be a shortened version of the same.
