Before you think about moving them, do we know if they cover the ugly carpark under the convention centre?Phantom wrote:Just working a hypothetical angle here, do you reckon it would look good, if the boathouses could be somehow (I highly, HIGHLY doubt it's possible) be moved under the southern side of the Morphett St bridge?
That way, it would be hidden from Adelaide's 'postcard view' of the Convention Centre, and also, they are still only metres from the actual river itself. This way would be the perfect compromise, I feel... If only it were viable.

To me this is a no-brainer to fix ...
- Increase the slope of the grass from the river, so that you can walk directly from the riverbank walkway onto the grass (hence covering up the car park)
- Add some high quality landscaping and lighting
- Increase the width of the terrace in front of the Convention Centre and Intercontinental to allow for more outdoor dining
- Build some small-scale pavilions to accommodate restaurants/bars/cafes and the like in front of the Convention Centre

Agree, that car park is a real blot on the landscape.Matt wrote:I really hate that car park. Really hate.
Hopefully, something will be done to ameliorate its effect on the surrounding riverbank landscape. Note some suggestions already coming into this forum.
Not impressed with its impact on the North Terrace streetscape either!
BTW I like the boatsheds (must be maintained to high standard) and their connection to the heritage of the river.
And I just love the new footbridge!!!
Remember when folk were arguing over its positioning - closer to the Casino/Railway Station or the Convention Centre???
No longer an issue. They got it right.

The new renders look good. Not as good at the original render for the 3rd convention centre.
Why would you want to get rid of the rowing sheds? Id suggest building a few more even.
Good call to make them more like the surf clubs with bars open to the public

Those boat sheds will move eventually no doubt, I expect to the North West side of the Morphett Street bridge.
At the moment however it's not like there is a lack of Riverbank space. They bring activity to the area, which is what is important, not having everything be new and shiny. Develop the rest of the riverbank precinct, especially the criminally underused south bank on the other side of the Morphett Street bridge, and then once there is no more space we can start removing things.

I am still unsure about the 'galv look' at the northern end. Pictures taken Sunday 5 Jan 2014.

ERG, I don't think the galv iron look is what it will be like when its finished. In your second photo, to the far left - you can see copper / aluminium cladding being placed over the galvanised iron. It seems that is what the final treatment will be.

Imagine if this building was almost entirely glazed instead of the random glass and mismatched panels. Could have been something else.
Oh well, really waiting to see the final result.

Agree, it's ugly. And that's why it's great, a building that has people talking, love it or hate it who cares! Rather that then just meh

If we are spending so much money, why don't we build something with a sense of.. I don't know.. grandeur?
Presenting to you, the new Adelaide Convention Centre:

Just something like that in Adelaide would put us at the top of the country for architecture.
