No. Their facebook page suggests that it will be an upmarket bar. It's located where the old supermild
bar was. The management of the Little Red Door must have spent a fair bit of money internally as supermild
was pretty run down.

It's probably fair to say that an upmarket bar in that location wouldn't have been viable a couple of years ago. I imagine
that the management of TLRD are hoping that they will benefit from the influx of people when the medical precinct
opens on North Terrace.

I never fail to be amazed by bars which advertise themselves as 'upmarket'. For a start, use of that term kind of screams that they are very much downmarket. Plus they all seem to be themed around thinly-veiled strip joints for coked-up 1980s stockbroker types.

The advertising seems a bit over the top.

TLRD have installed a roof over the beer garden which seems crazy to me. One of the best things about supermild
was the beer garden out the back where the punters could have a smoke and enjoy the fresh air.

nice drinking places just don't seem to last in Adelaide, I just don't think the market is deep enough to have an upmarket drinking place (small bars and some of the hotel bars seem to cater for that market now anyway)

I guess that poses the question as to what is 'upmarket'? In the same way that a hipster would never admit to being a hipster, a bar labeling itself as 'upmarket' probably is just trying too hard. In my mind when that term is used to describe a bar it tends to mean glitzy, over the top, gold-plated, crystal chandelier type places with unnecessary dress codes - upmarket in a kind of Kim Kardashian way (i.e. not at all). I'm just not sure that much of a market exists for that nowadays outside of certain suburbs in Sydney or Essex, UK.

To me some of the small bars like Clever Little Tailor and Bank Street Social are upmarket - but in much more classy (i.e. understated) way. Still not 100% my thing but I'll happily pop in for a drink.

Personally I like things a little more grimy and traditional - can't go wrong with the Exeter, Grace Emily or Wheatsheaf. Not sure there should be any pretentiousness around having a drink with your mates. Each to their own though.

I think the Grace Emily and the Wheatshef fall into the same category as the Clever Little Taylor and Bank Street Social in terms of the people it attracts.

It's a nonsense term, usually just means they'll have some vodka-and-juice "cocktails" on a menu.

This is the same bunch of hacks that have been failing miserably with the venue next door since Elysium closed. TLRD may have been open sooner had they not spent so much time attempting to stall supermild's licensing process, steal the business name etc.

There were always noise issues with the hotel next door. Last I heard said hotel was being pretty active in TLRD's licensing hearings and TLRD were required to build a massive wall around the beer garden to address this, so enclosing it may be a part of certifying with the audio engineers and getting their license/council approvals.

Super nightclub Q set to revitalise Adelaide’s Hindley St with giant multi-entertainment complex

LOOK out small bars, the super club is back.

HQ nightclub is dropping the H to become simply Q, a three-level super club at a new home on Hindley St, which will feature restaurants, bars, a coffee shop, function areas and several live entertainment rooms.

The entertainment complex — with a capacity of 2300 people — is set to revitalise the western end of Hindley St alongside the renovated Crazy Horse complex and cinemas. It is scheduled to open its doors next April.

The venue, designed by Milne Architects, aims to attract 40 per cent more live acts to the city precinct and create more than 150 jobs with its seven-day trading.

The site takes in the two buildings on Hindley St just east of the corner of Morphett Street.

Director Rod Rose, who also owns the Rosemont Hotel opposite, says the operation has been a long time coming.

“We’ve been working on this for a while so it’s great to finally get all the approvals in place and unveil it,” he said.

“It’s going to offer a new experience for people in the city. The ground floor includes food and bar services with nightly entertainment and the upper floor, mezzanines and balconies will be the main club area.

“We’re offering bands for up to 1800 patrons, compared to 1100 we had at the old venue, and we are also looking at hosting more than 100 acts a year at the new venue compared to 65.”

The existing HQ on West Terrace will close its doors on January 28 after 10 years and an estimated four decades as a club destination in Adelaide, previously known as Joplin’s and Heaven.

The West Terrace site will be redeveloped with two high-rise towers, with the heritage building left intact between them.

Australian Hotels Association general manager Ian Horne said the refurbished superclub would be an important and exciting addition to the busy precinct.

“The development of a high-quality multi-faceted entertainment complex in the heart of the CBD will re-establish Hindley St as the must-go precinct,” he said.

“This proposal will be a major boost for live music with a capacity to host international, national and local acts.

“The vision for Q rivals that of Sydney’s iconic Ivy and fits perfectly with Adelaide’s strong branding as an emerging live music capital city.”

Construction of Q is set to begin in October.
