That's the one, though I think it was a little bit further down Oaklands Road, as the bus depot did exist in those days (though I don't know whether it was as big as it now is).

Yes, I also think you are confusing it with the Marion Metro Twin. I don't recall Starline having two screens.

The Metro Twin was east of the bus depot, so further up Oaklands road. It's all housing now. The bus depot was there when the drive in was there and I think it is still the same size.

We're told this virus will be with us for a long time. Perhaps there will be more, in fact its almost certain if not guaranteed. We have had measures like social distancing introduced, and that means things like cinemas cant operate.

How good would it be if as a result we saw a resurgence of the drive in? Imagine the likes of Hoyts, GreaterUnion, Reading opening drive ins.

I think if these restrictions remain such as social distancing, limiting how many people can be in a building, I think that associated behaviour will become ingrained into society and second nature, which would probably create conditions for drive ins to thrive again. People are and will certainly be starved for entertainment outside of their homes. Could even have a crew of people taking orders for food & drink and bringing it to your car.

Could have one at Elizabeth behind the shopping centre
One at Parafield airport
St Agnes on Smart Rd
Adelaide Airport
Around the Noarlunga shopping centre
That corner near the Sturt police station near the expressway if it was reconfigured

By the time it would be ready, the pandemic would be over and it would be a waste of time

I love the idea, but having them at Adelaide and Parafield airports would be a bad idea.

True, I was just looking at google maps at open spaces without too much housing around them.

Interesting idea, but I think that times have changed.

Why do people go out to cinemas, and would a drive-in meet today's needs?
  • Socialise with friends - either in their own car (so not much interaction) or in your car, just as close as at the cinema
  • See new movies - Netflix or similar with a big home theatre setup meets that need now, but wasn't available in the age of drive-ins
  • Be seen to have a car and using it - everyone has cars now
  • Better audio surround sound at a cinema - but probably not in your car

Drive in theatres are not just competing with cinemas, they're also competing with watching a movie at home. I doubt that it would make enough people leave the house.

The drive in at Gepps Cross seems to do just fine.

We are living in a different time now, with restrictions on movements and what people can do in large groups. The second wave in Victoria and the scare we are having here at the moment will be the norm with more "waves" of the virus over the course of the next year or two. And if there is no additional major outbreak as the one we are seeing in Melbourne at present then I think we will definitely have tighter restrictions to stop more outbreaks. And every time there is a sudden flurry of new cases, the restrictions will come back in force or get tighter.

So I think it's entirely plausible that things like drive in cinemas would be a thing once again. I think at the very least it's worth considering setting up a pop up drive in down south perhaps. See how it goes. Perhaps a council can team up with a cinema group and set one up as a trial.

Tell me, how are you going to social distance in a cinema? People can't even social distance in a super market, and you're there for a short time as opposed to a cinema where you are in there breathing the same re-circulated air as other people for two+ hours.

A drive in cinema allows people to be within their own space away from others, ie social distancing.

I think you guys are underestimating just how much people would take to something like that as a measure of freedom of movement and choice.
Sure it's great to sit at home with the heater on during these cold nights and watch Netflix. But are you going to sit in your home every single night? I think not. Well, maybe you will, but most people want to get out and about. Especially in the warmer months of the year.

What's going to happen if come Christmas and New Years we are still under restrictions? The impact that will have on peoples psyche will be immense. People will have an even greater desire to get out and about again.
It's almost certain there wont be any large public new years eve celebrations this year. The Christmas carols around the city wont be happening. How are you going to social distance 40,000+ people at Civic Park?
There wont be an Adelaide 500, certainly not with fans in the stands. The tennis tournament wont be happening. Most of the Fringe and Adelaide Festival if any of it wont go ahead either given how many of the performers are international acts and they're saying there wont be any international travel until 2023.

As far as I remember, the virus spreads through droplets, not through the air. Re-circulated air, especially with a decent air filter, does not spread the virus.

I also doubt a cinema will want to make a major land and capital injection into a product that will die out in 1 or 2 years. A pop-up drive-in is more likely.

Victoria - 3 drive ins. All three of have 3 screens, with two of them having a third screen added this century.
NSW - 3 drive ins. The drive in at Blacktown is operated by Greater Union. 2 screens. They also have a 'seasonal' drive in at Randwick, a pop up as we're calling it in here.
Queensland - 5 drive ins.
A drive in cinema actually opened in the ACT in 2018.

You guys are dismissing the idea outright because of the notion that people will stay home to watch netflix or rather go to an enclosed cinema. But the GeppsX drive in has seen an increase in patrons during the pandemic.
We have the moonlight cinemas in parklands that prove popular every summer as well.
Coober Pedy still has a drive in.

We live in a different time, where perhaps those old notions aren't as relevant. That would be backed up by the increase in patrons at GeppsX.
People don't want to be confined to their homes every day/night after work. If people don't want to, or can't go to a cinema because of the pandemic, because of things like social distancing, well a great alternative is a drive in. Seems a lot of people agree with that idea seeing as GeppsX has seen their business increase during this pandemic.

Another concern many will or do have, is has that cinema they are about to step foot in an spend the next 2 hours in been cleaned properly. The answer is no, it hasn't and no it wont be.
They can't even clean the "medihotels" properly and they are supposed to be doing deep cleans & sterilization. Plenty of people coming out and saying that the rooms they are being put in haven't been cleaned properly.

Who knows, perhaps more people will re-discover the drive in experience.

How hard would it be to set up a pop-up drive-in? With Bluetooth readily available these days there would be no need for speakers or even posts with the connections to your car radio aerial. Earthworks (the low mounds to create the vertical viewing angle) could be done in a day in a vacant lot, probably by bringing in dolomite and creating mounds, rather than digging. The most difficult thing, I imagine, would be setting up a safe screen that will not fall over in high wind - but even that is achievable withourt too much fuss. Pop up vendors could supply snacks and drinks out of caravans like they do at so many other places. I believe that if the weather and the marketing is right, drive-ins could see a resurgence, if only for the next year or two. Lots of people are going stir crazy at home.

They havent used speakers on poles next to cars for many many years. You tune your car radio into the sites FM station.

There already is a growing interest, GeppsX has seen an increase in business.

Can FM transmit surround sound, or only stereo? Will typical car radios handle surround sound properly? I know my car has balance controls for both left-right and front-back, and the built-in navigation system seems to only use the front speakers, but I don't know if it could play surround sound.
