I agree. A few times I have been to see the finish of a stage of the TDU. It surprises me
that they don't have a couple of big screens for the public.

Well the Jan-March festive season is officially upon us. Thanks to the TDU, Rundle St was a hive of activity yesterday afternoon/evening.

this year's tour has been brilliant, the city atmosphere each night has been amazing. From what i've heard it's been a very good time for bars, cafes and businesses in the city around Gouger and Rundle st. Also the tour brings in a lot of people with money from overseas, classy Europeans, and fit, healthy cyclists who ride our around the city's streets and also gets locals out on their bikes too. Big contrast to the Adelaide 500 race which brings in the white trash from Lizbeff and Hack'em in their dirty Commonwhores and Faul-cons, and the race itself creates a lot of noise and leaves a big cloud of pollution over the city

Actually, I think you'll find that the "pollution" output over the race weekend is less than if it was open to normal traffic for that time. Can't remember where I read that though (and it might have been referring to F1 rather than V8s).

The TDU is certainly doing wonders for city vibrancy. It's a great event.

TOUR DOWN UNDER WINS NATIONAL TOURISM AWARD
Santos Tour Down Under has been named the country’s best major festival and event, for the
second year in a row, at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.
The 2010 event, held from 17-24 January, 2010, won the Major Festivals and Events category at the
national awards ceremony in Perth, last night.
The 2010 Santos Tour Down Under attracted record crowds, visitor numbers and income for the
South Australian economy
Premier Mike Rann said the award was a fantastic achievement and recognised the huge growth of
the event since its inception in 1999.
“The Santos Tour Down Under has grown to become the biggest sporting event staged in South
Australia. Last year’s Tour attracted 770,500 spectators, including thousands of interstate and
overseas visitors, who helped inject $41.5 million into the South Australian economy,” he said.
Mr Rann said the Tour beat strong competition from other events, including Sydney New Year’s Eve
and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, for the title.
It is the third award for the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under, with the event also winning:
• Australian Event Awards – Best Tourism Event (October 2010)
• South Australian Tourism Awards – Major Festivals and Events category (November 2010)
• Safe Work SA “Best Public Event Safety” award (October 2010)
“It is a fantastic achievement and recognises the hard work of everyone involved who make the
event such a success each year,” he said.
“The Santos Tour Down Under continues to go from strength to strength, with preliminary results
revealing record crowds of 772,000 people enjoyed the 2011 event, held this year from January 16 to
23.”
The 2010 Santos Tour Down Under was full of many highlights, including Andre Greipel winning
the Overall Santos Ochre Winner’s Jersey, Lance Armstrong debuting his team RadioShack and
world champion Cadel Evans wearing his rainbow jersey, for the first time, with his new team BMC
Racing Team. “The Santos Tour Down Under is the first event of the year on the UCI WorldTour calendar and
continues to grow in popularity with interstate and overseas visitors. It also continues to attract the
world’s best riders who look forward to the race and the chance to battle it out for the Overall
Santos Ochre Winner’s Jersey.”

The 2010 Santos Tour Down Under beat entries from Floriade – Mind, Body and Soul (ACT),
Sydney New Year’s Eve (NSW), Gold Coast Airport Marathon (QLD), Melbourne Food and Wine
Festival (VIC) and Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association – Cow Parade (WA), for the title.

THIS year's Santos Tour Down Under attracted more than 782,000 spectators - the biggest crowd in its 13-year history, the State Government says.

Premier Mike Rann announced economic impact and research figures revealed the event raised more than $43 million, compared to $41.5 million at last year's Tour. The 2010 event attracted just under 771,000 racegoers.

Mr Rann's office said the research showed the 2011 race attracted an average of $1,169 from each overseas and interstate visitor.

Mr Rann said the Tour continued to go from strength to strength as the state's biggest sporting event. "The Santos Tour Down Under has enjoyed massive growth since it received UCI WorldTour status in September 2007, more than doubling in every key indicator, including economic benefit, visitor and spectator numbers and media coverage," he said. "It also showcases South Australia to the rest of the world via a huge international television audience - television broadcast 284 hours of this year's event and attracted $154.3 million worth of media coverage."

The State Government also announced the Tour's official vehicle supplier Skoda had signed a new three-year partnership with the event to extend until 2014.

Skoda Australia head Matthew Wiesner said he was delighted the relationship between his organisation and the Tour would continue. "We have strongly supported the event since 2008 when Skoda was launched in Australia," he said. "Our sales since then have grown strongly, like the success of the event."

The Government said Independent research company McGregor Tan conducted the research on behalf of the event.
