It’s more aesthetically pleasing but it’s not a practical solution. In fact, the way I see it, it will only cause more issues with the flow of traffic than having right-hand turning lanes.

You’re sending all traffic from ANZAC Hwy intending to head north or south on the N-S Motorway through a set of traffic lights to a single lane loop road that lands you at a stop whilst waiting for traffic (stationary or moving) to let you in, once you’re finally on south road you’re then back at another set of traffic lights. A slip road might fix this but given there will be thousands of cars using this option each day, you’re going to see a back up of traffic trying to use this system. I know the flyover concept was pulled to pieces by locals but I dare say the property acquisition required for these loops and the headaches they will cause long term are going to cost a lot more than a couple of flyovers would have both fiscally and aesthetically.

This intersection really could/should have made use of a diverging diamond or contraflow interchange:

It seems to be a similar concept to what they've done at Port Rd. Turn left to Turn right.

This is a much more compact application of it though. I can see the tight nature of it causing issues.

The pedestrian crossings appear to be set back from the line of the noise walls. A car/truck approaching on South Road intending to turn left needs to slow down next to or in the bike lane while traffic around it s expecting to continue to the traffic lights. The turning vehicle then needs to be alert to pedestrians on the crossing which may have been obscured by the sound wall until the vehicle had started the turn.

When this is opened, I'd like to see Mr Koutsantonis take his daughter for a bike ride along those bike lanes to demonstrate their safety.

Why, just because there is a lowered section of road does there need to be some sort of traffic gymnastics? I still don’t get the port road set up every time I use it. Travelling 50 meters East, to do a u turn to travel west just makes no sense to me. In the scheme of this massive project… buying some extra land at the intersection to create an extra turning lane would alleviate all of this surely.

I think it was more about avoiding the additional lights cycle than the land for a turning lane. The traffic modelling released at the time showed it was as quick or quicker to turn left to turn right than to hold the whole intersection up with a separate right turn cycle for N-S traffic on the surface road.

I do this turn all the time to be honest and it's really no bother. The lights cycles are timed pretty well so that there is minimal waiting time at the u-turn intersection on Port Road, and once you're through that the main intersection is always green. I can't see a separate right turn lane being any quicker at all.

This is a far better solution for both Anzac Highway and Port Roads.

2 sets of lights for all traffic using port Rd or Anzac highway doesn't sound good.

Diverging diamond seems more appropriate if the crossing road is minor.
Also the surface south Rd for both of these intersections goes straight which isn't managed by the diamond.

How much traffic will actually be turning right from Anzac to head north? Mainly those coming from Leader St?

Surely most City/Greenhill Rd traffic will enter the motorway northbound from Richmond Rd or Port Rd (for City traffic)?

Southbound, I can see a reasonable amount of traffic turning right from Anzac to the Motorway as the alternative is to drive along the surface road/alternate route to Darlington.

According to the news reports about the facility being built in the northern suburbs for the precast panel pieces that will line the tunnels, 55,000 of them apparently, the first tunnel pieces/wall linings whatever they're called, will be in place by next year?

The cleared area at Tonsley now has colorbond panels stapled over the chain link fence along South Rd so you can't see in anymore, wonder if that's to stop debris hitting cars, or rubberneck crashes?
