My apologies, didn’t realise retail news reguarding this development wasn’t worth the time and energy for some people.

Scroll on if it doesn’t interest you.

If you don't understand how development actually happens, you'd definitely be aloof to timtam's post.

This is a significant acquisition and one can only hope maintains the overall vision for the project (or improves upon it).

Exactly, so for mpol and shuz (especially shuz who has been on this forum for years) , to question why this news is important and to shrug it off as a “non news story” is laughable as is the ignorance of such important retail/business news regarding this very important development.

I don't see this as a win for the precinct, but rather another step towards it becoming a sterile shopping centre. The ACC have done their ratepayers and regular, long-term market goers the dirty with such a deal. Humour me for a second as I identify what exactly was great about the Markets before all of this came about, the food was of a superior quality to the average supermarket offering but it was affordable and therefore accessible to all. With the onset of this redevelopment, and to an extent the appointment of Theo Maras as the Central Market Authority Chair, the Markets have seen an exodus of their long term stall-holders, with vacant stall-holder space being turned into high-price restaurants, the authority forcibly pushing those remaining stall-holders to expand and upgrade, plus hiking the rent up which ultimately is driving the price of goods up. Whilst some of the obvious favourites of the Markets remain, if you frequent the Markets enough (which I suspect most of those who disagree with my points don't) you notice negative effects this development have had and continue to hav on the Market hall.

From reading timtam's post (and certainly my position) was that there was no position of win - or loss - actually suggested. Simply that it was important.

The CMAR was always going to have an impact on the 'Market' proper. This was perhaps inevitable.

It would be interesting to hear about why the longer-standing Market stallholders have decided to pack up and leave.

FWIW, I have resided in the city for over a decade and have shopped at the Central Markets for well over two decades. In the last 10 years, fresh produce prices have become comparable to those of supermarkets.
It hasn't been a 'cheap' place to get fruit and veg for a long time. Well before the redevelopment had any public traction.
The quality is debatably better - there's perhaps an extra day or two before the same item bought at a supermarket rots. This is maybe the difference in time it takes either to get food from 'farm to table'.

It will be a great challenge to attract moderate/high rent paying tenants to a development which directly interacts with what has historically been an 'affordable' place to buy produce.
Its only saving grace will be the significantly different tenant types who have little to do with the Markets proper.
Much the same as the original arcade (pet shop, Mexican restaurant, newsagency, supermarket, bottle shop, jewlerer, and so it goes on...) had little to do with the Market proper.

I’m sorry mate my post came off brash but I was gently asking why. Understood now. Thanks for posting

It matters because ICAM will eventually have control over the tenancy mix in the Market Square retail precinct.
