How many of you are regulars at the Jade?
[COM] Re: PRO: 122 Grenfell Street | 59m | 17 Levels | Hotel
The Jade's a great little spot imo, but it's definately not a conductive music venue for anything with guitar ampifiers.. The room is too small, the sound bounces all over the place creating standing waves - in english, it sounds like crap.. even though I've had a lot of great nights there, I would rather see this place on the chopping block over jive, fowlers, or the gov.

Sorry, but some of the comments here are downright offensive to anyone who makes part or all of a what is usually a meagre income out of trying to play live original music in Adelaide. Small music venues in old buildings, run by creative entrepreneurs are at the absolute centre of what makes a city vibrant. Without the independent, unique venues with a history behind them (no matter how short), the world's vibrant and exciting cities (Berlin, London, Melbourne, Sydney, Paris, New York, Fremantle) would be soul-less, cultureless working hubs. Let's not forget that the once grand Tivoli was where bands like Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel and the Skyhooks once played and is now an ode to the popped-collar shirt and pokie addiction. I agree the Jade is one of the less band-appropriate gig venues in Adelaide, but seriously, why can't we co-exist and have a new hotel next to a live-music venue? build next to it, around it, over it or under it (and noise-proof appropriately), but don't get rid of it . . . When are Adelaideans going to learn that new, shiny, precast, flatpack CBD restaurants, offices and hotels in the place of grungy, fun, live-original-music-supporting venues, will only continue to exacerbate the tide of young creatives moving east?
Maybe for a short time there are still a few old buildings in the CBD into which the Jade could move (if liquor licensing and ACC development regs/noise guidelines weren't so restrictive). However, the stage is rapidly approaching where there will be only a handful of venues in town that can provide gigs to new, original music acts, who need all the opportunities they can get to develop their stagecraft. Waewick, if you've ever been to a musical performance and enjoyed it, you can guarantee that the performers benefitted immensely at one stage of their careers, from the existence of venues like the Jade. There are not many left in Adelaide. This is a classic case of short-term gain being used in a overly weighted sense against wider aspirations and ideals for our city.
Why not let the development proceed on the grenfell st frontage but require that the Jade remain? Why does approval of the developer's plans attract an all or nothing attitude? Are we scared of offending shareholders in another country somewhere by asking that a concept plan be changed slightly? I don't see this as an either-or argument....there are always shades of grey, and there is always a creative solution that hasn't yet been thought of.

I still don't get who the club's supporters are actually angry with. The ACC? The DAC? I'm guessing it's the (probably very happy) ex-owner of the property who sold it to the developer? Or the developer? It seems straightforward why a developer would buy a small neighbouring property so he doesn't have to spend a small fortune on extra soundproofing to reduce the noise from it's part time music venue late at night. A venue that could very well choose to close it's doors or relocate at the next opportunity anyway.
I'm neutral towards the club itself and have absolutely nothing at all against it's patrons but seriously, for every one person who will pack up and move to Melbourne because of the loss of the JM I'm sure they'll be two (or ten) people directly or indirectly employed by the hotel who won't mind a bit. If the loss of one venue (and possibly only in it's current location) is enough for someone to jump ship to Melbourne then just go already and stop crying wolf, go see if the grass really is greener. For all those bands and fans who have a backbone and love the way the club operates then why not organize some mass support for the Jade's current 'creative entrepreneurs', do what you can to assist finding them another equally grungy space to rent in the CBD and get on with it. That's what being young and 'indi' is all about.

oh yeah Adelaide desperately needs another concrete and glass hotel.. we are crying out for it, they are so attractive and add sooo much to our skyline and the street level activation from such a hotel is just mindblowing. not!
The current building should be heritage listed, full stop.

Although I think the Jade Monkey is vital to the live music scene, I have come to the realisation that the Jade Monkey is not a building but a club. Just like Tuxedo Cat, there is nothing stopping the Jade Monkey moving to another equally appropriate space within the CBD.
What we should be campaigning for instead is for the ACC to relax their restrictive liquor and noise policies.

The developer bought as one property. The land is 'L shaped' with 2 street frontages.Just build it wrote:It seems straightforward why a developer would buy a small neighbouring property
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

[COM] Re: PRO: 122 Grenfell Street | 59m | 17 Levels | Hotel
I don't understand why most people are seeing this as an either/or proposition. It's not either build the hotel, or keep the Jade. The hotel doesn't need the Jade to go in order to be built -- it's not building on the Jade! The thing that should outrage us all is that the developer is, as far as we can tell, proposing to demolish the Jade just for the sake of it! That leaves us all the poorer, and it shouldn't be accepted.
Keep Adelaide Weird
[COM] Re: PRO: 122 Grenfell Street | 59m | 17 Levels | Hotel
Could it be that the land the Jade is on will be used for access/crane-basing in order for the hotel to go up quickly and cheaply enough for its construction to be commercially viable?
[COM] Re: PRO: 122 Grenfell Street | 59m | 17 Levels | Hotel
If I had to guess, I'd say it's because hotel guests wouldn't like having a live music venue right next door.
